✨Our next student spotlight is Ashlee Korte!✨

Name: Ashlee Korte
Degree: M.S.
Division: Fisheries
Advisor: Dr. Jim Long

Q: Tell us about your research in one or two sentences.
A: My research evaluates the efficiency of three sampling gears for capturing age-1 pallid sturgeon in the lower Missouri River. I also study their movement and habitat use to better understand post-stocking behaviors.

Q: What has been your favorite part of your project so far?
A: My favorite part of the project has been the fieldwork and piecing together why age-1 pallid sturgeon are so difficult to capture while learning more about their movement and habitat post-stocking.

Q: Why are you passionate about this field?
A: Growing up, the outdoors was a huge part of my life and fishing became an early passion that led me to a career where I can combine my love of fisheries with the opportunity to better understand and conserve an endangered species for future generations.

Name: Natalie Becker
Degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.): M.S.
Division (Forestry, Range, Wildlife, Fisheries): Wildlife
Advisor: Dr. Scott Loss and Dr. Craig Davis

Q: Tell us about your research in one or two sentences.
A: I study waterbird migration phenology and look at shifts in spring migration timing for waterfowl and shorebird species that migrate through the U.S. Great Plains region by using the popular citizen science platform, eBird. I also evaluate decision-support tools used in natural resource management and conservation to understand and inform the future development and implementation of such tools.

Q: What has been your favorite part of your project so far?
A: My favorite part of my projects has been using large datasets to answer broad ecological questions that would be difficult to study at smaller scales. I enjoy uncovering large patterns in wildlife migration and seeing how those insights can help inform conservation and natural resource management decisions.

Q: Why are you passionate about this field?
A: My passion for wildlife ecology and natural resource conservation began in childhood, when I was fortunate to spend time outdoors and participate in conservation and environmental education programs. Those experiences sparked a lasting interest in understanding wildlife and their ecosystems. Today, I am passionate about the opportunity to contribute research that improves our understanding of wildlife communities and supports effective management and conservation.

Name : Beckham Baker

Division (Forestry, Range, Wildlife, Fisheries) : Forestry
Co-Advisors: Dr. Aalap Dixit (NREM) and Dr. Bee Khim Chim (PaSS)

Q: Tell us about your research in one or two sentences.
A: My research projects are looking into different biochar rates and feedstocks to promote economically and ecologically sustainable growing media practices for containerized seedling production across the southcentral US.

Q: What has been your favorite part of your project so far?
A: My favorite part of my research projects is having such a direct hand in the growth and analysis of the seedlings we produce. From mixing and analyzing the growing media treatments, to sowing the seeds and watching the seedlings grow, and ultimately harvesting them to analyze how differently they responded to each of the treatments. It's fascinating to grow these seedlings with the purpose of determining ways that we may improve the system.

Q: Why are you passionate about this field?
A: I have always loved trees, but it wasn't until I got to college that I learned about forestry. From there things have fallen into place for me to get my M.S., and I have developed a fonder love for research to sustainably produce more trees! The future of seedling production needs to be sustainable for nursery managers as well as the environment, and to be able to provide information to aid the region succeed feels unmatched.

✨Our next student spotlight is Remy Sutherland!✨

Name : Remy Sutherland
Degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) : Ph.D.
Division (Forestry, Range, Wildlife, Fisheries) : Range
Advisor: Dr. Sam Fuhlendorf

Q: Tell us about your research in one or two sentences.
A: I study how grazing and fire influence ecosystem patterns and processes in tallgrass prairie. In particular, I'm interested in how management decisions (such as stocking rate, season of fire, and herbicide application) can support different land objectives including biodiversity conservation, livestock production, and invasive species control.

Q: What has been your favorite part of your project so far?
A: My favorite part has been the opportunity to meet so many incredibly passionate and conservation-minded people through this project - from our project partners at The Nature Conservancy, private land managers in Oklahoma and the Flint Hills, to fellow students and department members at OSU.

Q: Why are you passionate about this field?
A: My passion for natural resource management stems from both the opportunity to contribute to solutions to important societal challenges as well as a deep personal curiosity. I am fascinated by rangelands and endlessly curious to better understand them through scientific exploration.
