Once owned by the Lenni-Lenape Indians, then chartered in 1738 the township once sprawled west to the Delaware River and south to the Muconetcong River. The town of Phillipsburg was formed from it as were Lopatcong, Pohatcong, Harmoney and Franklin Townships. It took root when Thomas Stewart, a former secretary to George Washington, settled in the township in 1793, of which it gets it name of Stewartsville.
