We're Hiring a Soil Conservation Technician!

Golden Sands RC&D, in partnership with the USDA-NRCS, is seeking a full-time, 2-year term Soil Conservation Technician based in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. This role provides technical assistance to agricultural producers across Central Wisconsin to help design and implement tailored natural resource conservation plans. The successful candidate will work closely with NRCS field staff to promote, coordinate, and accelerate enrollment in Farm Bill conservation programs.

🚨 WATER LETTUCE FOUND IN SECOND LAKE, TREMPEALEAU

A population of water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes), a prohibited invasive species in Wisconsin, has been found in Second Lake in Trempealeau.

Water lettuce is a floating aquatic plant that can rapidly reproduce and form dense mats on the surface of the water. These mats can block sunlight, reduce oxygen levels, impact native plants and wildlife, and interfere with boating, fishing, and other recreational activities.

🌱 This is an important reminder: NEVER dump unwanted aquatic plants into the wild.

Water garden and aquarium plants may look harmless, but once introduced into a lake, stream, wetland, or pond, they can become a serious problem.

Before getting rid of an unwanted aquatic plant:
❌ Do NOT release it into a lake, river, stream, wetland, or stormwater pond.
❌ Do NOT give it to someone who may release it.
✅ Dispose of it properly so it does not make its way into Wisconsin waters.

Help protect Wisconsin's waters — what doesn't belong in your aquarium or water garden doesn't belong in our lakes. 💧🌿

🦆 Waterfowl Season Is Coming — Don’t Give Invasives a Ride! 🌿

Wisconsin’s 2026 waterfowl seasons are fast approaching, with the Northern Duck Zone opening September 26 and the Southern Duck Zone opening October 3.

Waterfowl hunters spend a lot of time moving between Wisconsin’s lakes, rivers, marshes and wetlands — making them an important partner in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS).

AIS can hitch a ride on more than just boats. Mud, plant fragments, seeds, snails and even water trapped in equipment can move invasive species from one waterbody to another. Hunting dogs can also pick up seeds, snails and other organisms in their coats. 🐶

Before heading out to your next hunting spot, remember to:

🔎 INSPECT waders, boots, boats, trailers, decoys, blinds and other equipment.

🌿 REMOVE plants, animals and mud from your gear.

💧 DRAIN water from boats, motors, decoys and other equipment.

🚫 NEVER MOVE live plants or animals from one waterbody to another.

It only takes a few extra minutes to help protect the wetlands and waterways we enjoy throughout Wisconsin. Clean your gear. Protect your hunting grounds. Stop AIS in its tracks. 🦆💧

Anglers, let’s do our part to keep our lakes and rivers clean from invasive species:
• Drain all water (except up to 2 gal for minnows) and clean your gear.
• Buy minnows only from licensed Wisconsin dealers.
• Leftover minnows? Reuse only if no extra water was added.
• Never use live fish—or improper bait—as bait. Only prey from the same water or properly preserved items are allowed.
• Don't dump bait—trash it.
