North Central Conservancy Trust

North Central Conservancy Trust Based in Stevens Point, NCCT is a non-profit land trust with a mission to conserve the natural heritage of Central Wisconsin through the protection of land.

To date, NCCT has worked with private landowners to protect more than 5,300 acres of land. What is NCCT? NCCT is a non-profit land trust working to conserve the natural heritage of Central Wisconsin through the protection of land. How Does NCCT Help Landowners? NCCT works with landowners to develop conservation easements to protect and preserve the conservation values of their properties. A conser

vation easement is a legal agreement between a landowner and a land trust like NCCT that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. It allows landowners to continue to own and use their land, and they can also sell it or pass it on to heirs. When a landowner donates a conservation easement to a land trust, they give up some of the rights associated with the land. For example, they might give up the right to build additional structures, while retaining the right to grow crops. Future owners also will be bound by the easement’s terms. The land trust is responsible for making sure the easement’s terms are followed. Conservation easements offer great flexibility. An easement on property containing rare wildlife habitat might prohibit any development, for example, while an easement on a farm might allow continued farming and the addition of agricultural structures. An easement may apply to all or a portion of the property, and need not require public access. Why should I support NCCT? Conservation easements are the primary way in which our rural landscape and privately owned important natural areas are protected. NCCT is the only organization in the north central region of Wisconsin whose mission is to hold and protect conservation easements. We are dependent on your support to fund our work helping to maintain the beauty and quality of the central Wisconsin landscape to the benefit of all who live or visit here.

Over the past few weeks NCCT volunteers donated more than 60 hours of their time to help build a trail at the Big Cain Creek Preserve in the Town of Texas, Marathon County. The crew worked with staff to clear a corridor for the trail, build trail tread, move stones, and more. ⚒️🪨🥾

Thank you so much to everyone who has helped with this project, it couldn't be done without you!

When the trail is complete, it will be about 0.4 miles long and will highlight sections of Big Cain Creek. Stay tuned for future workdays and a Preserve grand opening celebration!

Support for this project was provided through the Wausau Marathon County Impact Fund of the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin. Read more here: www.ncctwi.org/cfncw-awards-ncct-with-3000-grant/

This past weekend, NCCT supporters enjoyed a beautiful morning with U.S. Forest Service botanist and ecologist, Matt Bushman, for a guided nature hike through Mumford Preserve.

Attendees learned about the special plants and wildlife that inhabit the nature preserve, and the various landscapes on the 160-acre property. They were also able to experience the several improvements completed in 2025, including a kiosk with informational signage, a parking lot, seating areas, and a scenic trail that winds along the banks of the Eau Claire River.

A big thank you to Matt Bushman and his family for sharing their knowledge and passion for the ecosystems found at Mumford Preserve!

A special thank you to Bob Freckmann for sharing his never-ending knowledge of the plants on the Island, Scott for serving as our captain for the morning, and Susan and Joy for giving us an up-close look at their bird banding project taking place on the Island!

A big thank you to Sara Denissen Photography for taking photos that morning and capturing the Island's beauty!

*Bird banding activities are conducted for research purposes under active permits and valid certifications.
