Over the past few years, there has been a joint effort to remove the buckthorn throughout Schmeeckle Reserve, and we have made a lot of progress! This post only covers one restoration site of many.

Over the past 2023-2024 academic year, SER members clocked 667 hours volunteering, not including all the work done outside of volunteer workdays by the Schmeeckle Crew.

Thank you to all of the Schmeeckle staff, professors, Schmeeckle crew, and SER volunteers who made this progress possible.

SER and SAF braved the rain to plant a mix of pine and oak seedlings as part of a reforestation effort at Treehaven on Balckberry Hill, a site prepped with prescribed fire last summer.

Tonight, our Vice President Olivia Greymont, Treasurer Isaiah Guida, and Anna Mathews presented their poster at the Wisconsin Wetlands Conference. They focused on SER's stewardship program and the restoration work we have been doing in Schmeeckle Reserve.

Fire is a great tool for restoration and this past weekend members of SER participated in or taught the FOR 224 class with
Everyone taking this class comes out a Type II Firefighter and can participate on prescribed burns!

Yesterday’s burns pine prairie, and today we seeded it with native sedges we collected in the fall! We have been working hard on this site since 2019 and it’s so good to see how far it’s come!
