On Saturday, January 24, Pack 293 held its annual Pinewood Derby. All the Scouts and families had a great time, and every car successfully made it down the track for all 16 races they participated in.

The adults also participated in a Renegade Race of adult cars, the inventiveness was excellent.

Older Scouts from Troop 293 helped run the race, allowing the adults of the Pack to be parents for the day, and not worry about leading the youth.

If this looks interesting to your young person, Scouting is open to all youth from kindergarten to their 18th birthday, let us know.

On the weekend of January 16 to 18, Scouts from Troop 293 (now a Family Troop for Boys and Girls) attended Hanna Winter Resort at Crystal Lake Scout Reservation in Rhinelander, WI. We had 7 Scouts attend, all challenged at least one merit badge, a few completed all the requirements during the outing. Some Scouts used the afternoon to learn XC Skiing, others did some sledding, all had a great time.

We are now preparing for our next outing to the Wausau area in February for XC Skiing and winter camping at the end of February.

If this is the outdoor fun your youth would be interested in, let us know.

School has started and our youth are looking forward to having fun and adventures. Parents are looking for value-based activities that will impact their children for their entire lives. Scouting is that program, just ask David Montgomery of the Detroit Lions.

If your young person is looking for an activity they will remember for the rest of their lives, check us out at BeAScout.org, or email [email protected].

During the week of July 28 to August 1 Scouts from Combined Troop 293 attended their annual summer camp at Camp Tesomas near Rhinelander, WI. During our week there 6 Scouts challenged 21 merit badges in subjects ranging from Animation, Lifesaving, Cooking, Painting, Swimming, Chemistry, Environmental Science, among others.

Our 3 First Year Scouts all attended a program called Eagle Quest where they learned and demonstrated skills in the first few ranks of Scouting.

3 of our Scouts were inducted into the Order of the Arrow, Scoutings recognition of Honored Campers, where they are expected to provide continued service to their units.

We had a great week and the staff did a wonderful job of keeping the Scouts engaged and helping them do their best to earn their badges and advancements.

This past weekend Scouts from Combined Troop 293 spent the day canoeing the North Fork of the Flambeau River. Unfortunately none of our girls were available to participate in the outing, but the Scouts who could attend, had a great time. We canoed 11.4 miles in about 3 1/2 hours, including a stop for lunch.

With the recent rain the water was much higher than it has been in the past. Normally there are 3 Class I rapids we transit during the trip, this time all the rapids were well under water and nothing more than fast water. Since all but one of our Scouts had limited canoeing experience, this was a good thing.

This trip is one we do every 3 years in support of the Camping Merit Badge. If this is the kind of activity you think your young person would be interested in email [email protected], or search for Troop 293 in Stevens Point at beascout.org.

Scout Troop 293 (Combined) in Stevens Point has continued to be very active. In April we participated in the annual Scouting for Food campaign to help provide food for those around us who are less fortunate.

Later in April the local Scouting District held their Spring Camporee. Scouts learned some of the basic skills of Scouting; cooking, woods tool care and safety, maps and land navigation, etc. We had about 80 Scouts and 30 adults attend from all around Portage County.

On May 10th Scouts helped American Legion Berens-Scribner Post 6 with placing flags on veteran's graves at Guardian Angel Cemetery for Memorial Day.

Then on the weekend of 16th our Troop camped locally again. This time we spent the morning at Schmeekle Reserve, specifically Lake Joanis, doing our flat water practice in preparation for canoeing the Flambeau River in June. After we were done there we spent a few hours at the Portage County Safety Days checking things out. Finally we spent the afternoon working on advancements for our newest Scouts.

For more information about Scouting with Pack or Troop 293, contact [email protected]. We are open to all youth from Kindergarten through 18.

On March 29th Scouts from Troop 293 (Combined) took an overnight adventure to Eagle Cave in Blue River, WI. We had the chance to explore a large onyx cave, hunt for "gold nuggets", play bingo and then sleep in the cave overnight.

This is an adventure we all look forward to and work to make happen about every three years. During the other years we usually do an overnight on the USS Cobia and then attend Maple Days at Bear Paw Scout Camp.

Scouting is an adventure for all youth and Troop 293 is actively participating in the Combined Troop Pilot program and our boys and girls are working together very well.

On February 22nd Scouts from Pack 293 celebrated Scouting's anniversary with an overnight event at Boston School Forest. After an afternoon of outdoor fun sledding and other activities they had a dinner of spaghetti and meatballs topped off with cupcakes.

After dinner we graduated our Arrow of Light den to Combined Troop 293, we will miss them and hope to see them in the future as they help us with our Pinewood Derby and other activities.

We have been busy since our last update. On February 8th Scouts from Combined Troop 293 braved the Winter Storm Warning to complete the Snow Sports merit badge at Boston School Forest. Scouts learned about snow safety including avalanche safety, the importance of proper safety equipment, equipment fit, personal fitness, and dealing with cold weather injuries. In the afternoon we snowshoed around the trails at Boston School Forest for at least 2 miles to complete the requirements.

In the evening we played Scouting Jeopardy and generally had a great time.

If your young person would be interested in this type of activity, contact me at [email protected], or find Troop 293 at beascout.org.

On the weekend of Jan 17 to 19 Scouts from Combined Troop 293 attended winter camp at Hanna Venture Base in Rhinelander, WI.

On Saturday morning about half the troop conducted a 4 mile snowshoe hike around Crystal Lake Scout Reservation to complete a requirement for their Camping Merit Badge. The remainder of the troop participated in a merit badge program run by the staff.

Part of the program involves Scouts building their own foil dinners for lunch followed by a fruit cup and Hudson Bay Bread. Not every foil dinner turned out "like the picture", but they were all edible and the Scouts learned important lessons about cooking.

During the afternoon Scouts were provided opportunities for fun and games outside; sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, etc.

After dinner our Scouts then took another merit badge in the evening.

Our Scouts did a great job balancing fun and work for the weekend. If your young person is looking to build basic cooking skills and enjoys the outdoors, contact our Combined Troop Scoutmaster at [email protected]

On January 25th Cub Scouts from Pack 293 held their annual Pinewood Derby. We had a great time and all our Scouts were successful in working with their adult partners to build and race a car that made it down the track every heat.

The Cubs learned to plan and design a basic project, follow basic instructions, and demonstrate good sportsmanship regardless of how their finished product compared to others.

If you want to help teach a young person in your life these skills, Scouting may be for you.

Scouts from Combined Troop 293 are preparing for leadership training to be held at our December outing. Seeing our boys and girls work together so well, in a co-ed environment, is certainly rewarding.
