The UWSP Historic Preservation and UWSP Archives came together to make SIX awesome display cases in front of the Laird Room in the DUC (Dreyfus University Center). This display is also in honor of the 75th Anniversary of the University Center. The display will be up through this semester. Stop by to enjoy pieces of the past from UWSP.

The display that was featured this past December from the History department: Museum studies with Professor Cory Haala is up in the Nelson Hall lobby. Take a walk over to check it out! Also there are beautiful flowering spirea in the front of Nelson Hall right now, the grounds people do a beautiful job on campus.

The Historic Preservation Committee, Archives, the History program, Athletics, and the Women’s and Gender Studies program here at UWSP collaborated to create four displays on Women’s History in front of the Laird room in the DUC! From left to right, the cases honor 1) professors Mildred Davis and Bessie May Allen, 2) notable alums Margaret Ashmun, Dorothy Davids, Ada Deer, and Barbara Hickman, 3) the Take Back the Night campaign and protests in the 1980s, and 4) Women’s sports and the impact of Title IX on UWSP. Stop by when you’re in the DUC and take a look! (Special thanks to Valerie Barske, Brad Casselberry, Cary Elza, Shane Olsen, and Anne Swenson for their hard work on this project.)

A pioneer in the field of home economics and a champion of the subject on campus, Bessie May Allen was instrumental in shaping this institution. She was one of the organizers of the Wisconsin Home Economics Association, as well as an avid traveler. The trunk pictured here belonged to her, and originally housed her extensive doll collection, which she used to teach students about costume design, and which can now be seen on display in the Founders Room.

Michael Dombeck graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and General Science and 1974 with a Master of Science in Teaching degree in Biology and Education. As Acting Director of the Bureau of Land Management and the fourteenth Chief of the Forest Service, he helped develop the Natural Resources Agenda and was recognized with the Presidential Rank-Distinguished Executive Award.

Ever heard of the novels The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear? The author Patrick Rothfuss attended UWSP! His first two books of his series The Kingkiller Chronicle were best-sellers and award-winners, and since 2008, his charity Worldbuilders has raised over $10 million for Heifer International.
