A rail modeler is someone who builds a model of a railroad and all the scenery that goes with it. Yesterday I saw one that is being built of our railroad bridge and the Weirton Steel mill and the scene portrays September 1953 and it’s the Pennsylvania railroad. This is still a work in progress and more of the towns of Weirton and Steubenville will be added.

This Weirton native was obsessed with the railroad bridge since he was a boy and and the details are really great. I took some pictures and am anxious to see it when more is finished. Hope you enjoy them

A friend found these pictures in her attic that her husband who worked at AEP (formerly Ohio Power) found in the trash when they were moving from the south end of downtown to the west end. I took pictures of a few of them with my IPhone but would like to scan these sometime to get better clarity. Most of the pictures are from 1923-1926 but one from 1952 and one from 1965. You might recognize someone also. We are always interested in pictures like these and can scan easily or take a picture with our phone. History is cool even when it involves early electrical poles

This is our scanner for printed materials and larger pictures. It takes a picture of the items and can scan fast. After we scan a scrapbook like this, a program is run called OCR that reads every word. That way you can search your family name to see if your relatives are in these articles. We give our scanned files to our library and they are put on their cloud space called Digital Shoebox and is searchable by anyone via computer. These interesting series of scrapbooks are not yet on there. We are always welcoming any volunteers who would like to help with this.

I looked at another of the many scrapbooks that this one (not yet known) person has donated and they are so interesting. 1942 was a year of lots of crime and automobile accidents but also the start of the war and the area had to practice blackout drills. Also an effort was underway to melt metal for the war effort and a cannon on the courthouse lawn and a bell from a fire station were the first to be melted.
