Garden update!

It has been a while since the last update on here, sorry for that!
We have been harvesting the last of the vegetables (pumpkins and acorn squash), cleaning up the garden site for fall, saving seeds for next year, and making more compost.
Our latest project has been working on turning a bunch of old wooden tables (shown stacked in the second two photos) into raised beds for the garden. With the help of some of the Inscape missionaries, we now have two standing garden beds built. These beds are great for folks who have a difficult time bending or kneeling to garden, and are accessible for wheelchairs or other mobility aids as well.
And we'll be building several regular, on-ground raised beds next.
In the works are plans to turn the rest of the salvvaged lumber into a chicken coop as well.
We are preparing to hit the ground running for the Spring growing season!

If you would like to help out with projects like these, or are interested in the garden, reach out to the Urban Mission for volunteer opportunities, or send us an email at [email protected]

The zinnias are starting to bloom at the Urban Mission Garden Center. The tomato plants that the CHWC group transplanted are growing and starting to bloom, Mike's peppers are doing well, and the okra, squash, and cucumber seeds are starting to sprout. Everything is loving the rain we've gotten recently!
Also, the compost is breaking down... hopefully we'll have some compost ready to go for folks starting gardens in the fall or next spring!

Inviting our urban gardeners to attend this free meeting - happening tomorrow, June 14th, at the 7th Street Plaza in downtown Steubenville. We'd love to hear from you!

We sure hope you can come tomorrow! Your presence and input matters to us.

Here's a snippet from the Herald Star article in the newspaper today:

"Updates on the Seventh Street Plaza and a dream about the development of a ministry corridor in downtown Steubenville are topics Urban Mission Ministries is hoping the public will want to weigh in on during a community meeting Tuesday. An opportunity to “listen, share and dream about the future” is part of the free gathering that will run from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Seventh Street Plaza and include food, according to the Rev. Ashley Steele, the mission’s executive director.

Anyone is welcome to attend the meeting hosted by the mission and led by representatives of Rothschild Doyno Collaborative of Pittsburgh, an architecture and urban design firm. The mission has been working with the firm since the beginning of the year. Steele explained why. “We wanted to look at all our ministry sites because the plaza has inspired us to look at all of our ministry sites to make sure we’re using them to the best that we can, that we are making sure that what we do in each building is actually addressing a need in the community,”

We are excited to announce that we are back to work at the greenspace thanks to our community's support & our newest urban gardener, Moriah Irvin.

Moriah will be hosting her first volunteer opportunity, this Tuesday, beginning at 9am. You'll see the ground being tilled and prepared for a wide variety of vegetables and flowers to be planted.

If you're interested in volunteering at the garden or would just like to stop by and hear the plan for this year, we invite you to come this Tuesday, at 9am.

A great read from Strong Towns! Let us grow food where it makes sense to grow food. Whether that is your balcony, front porch, backyard, or yes, even front yard! Nothing is sweeter than having an abundance of vegetables to give to your neighbors, especially when they can SEE them grow and behold the effort and beauty of growing your own food.

In this town where so many people have front-lawn gardens, why is anyone still arguing that they shouldn’t be allowed?
