We are thrilled to share that ONE IN A MILLION, a powerful new documentary following the decade-long journey of a young Syrian refugee and her family, will celebrate its DC Premiere at the upcoming DC/DOX festival on Sunday, June 14 at 1:30 PM at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (641 D Street NW, Washington, DC 20004).

Filmed over ten years, ONE IN A MILLION follows Israa from childhood to adulthood on an extraordinary journey from Syria to Germany โ€” and back again. Co-directed by Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes, the film bears witness to the remarkable trust between filmmakers and family, following Israa and her loved ones across borders, cultures, and shifting circumstances. An intimate and nuanced coming-of-age story, ONE IN A MILLION illuminates the complexities of the refugee experience while asking a universal question: what does it truly mean to call a place home?

The screening will be followed by a conversation with the filmmakers and special guests. Get 10% off your ticket using code SYRIADOC10.

๐ŸŒ June is World Refugee Awareness Month ๐ŸŒ

This month, we honor the resilience, strength, and courage of millions of refugees around the world who have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety and a better future.

At Mozaic, we are privileged to walk alongside refugee families as they rebuild their lives here in the DMV.

We witness their determination every dayโ€”parents learning new skills, children thriving in school, women finding community and confidence, and families creating new beginnings despite unimaginable hardships.

Behind every refugee statistic is a story of hope, perseverance, and humanity.

As we observe World Refugee Awareness Month, we invite you to stand with refugees by listening to their stories, advocating for welcoming communities, volunteering your time, and supporting programs that help families rebuild with dignity.

๐Ÿ“ข SAVE THE DATE!
Join us on June 20th as we celebrate World Refugee Day with a special community event honoring the contributions, cultures, stories, and achievements of refugees in our community.

Everyone is welcome! Mark your calendars and stay tunedโ€”event details will be announced soon.

Together, we can help transform displacement into opportunity and isolation into belonging.

๐Ÿ’™ Refugees are not defined by what they have lost, but by the strength they show in moving forward.

๐Ÿ“š As we wrap up Summer Cleaning Day 2, we are excited to share an update on the growth of the Mozaic Library & Learning Space.

Over the past few weeks, we have received an incredible donation of 1,100 books from the nationwide Syrian Women Reading Clubโ€™s Hawamesh Library initiative based in New Haven, along with 400 additional books generously donated by community members.

Our team is currently cataloging and organizing these books into our online library catalog while expanding our shelves, reading areas, and learning spaces in preparation for opening the library to the community this summer.

Our collection includes books in English, Arabic, Russian, and Afghan literature, covering a wide range of subjects, including:

๐Ÿ“– History & Civilization
๐Ÿ“– Politics & Current Affairs
๐Ÿ“– Religion & Islamic Studies
๐Ÿ“– Health & Wellness
๐Ÿ“– Self-Improvement & Personal Development
๐Ÿ“– Psychology & Mental Health
๐Ÿ“– Parenting & Family Life
๐Ÿ“– Social Sciences & Community Studies
๐Ÿ“– Language Learning & Linguistics
๐Ÿ“– Literature, Poetry & Classical Works
๐Ÿ“– Novels & Short Stories
๐Ÿ“– Media & Journalism
๐Ÿ“– Culinary Arts & Cooking
๐Ÿ“– Arts, Culture & Heritage
๐Ÿ“– Education & Teaching Resources
๐Ÿ“– Career Development & Professional Skills
๐Ÿ“– Childrenโ€™s Books & Young Adult Literature
๐Ÿ“– Biographies & Memoirs

Many titles are translated editions of internationally renowned works, while others are rare Arabic reference books and educational resources that are increasingly difficult to find in bookstores today.

Your support will help us complete the next phase of this project by purchasing library shelving, desks, chairs, and furnishings, as well as finishing our computer lab. Together, these resources will provide youth, refugees, and community members with a welcoming space to read, study, build digital literacy, apply for jobs with coaching support, and strengthen their skills through career development programs.

Thank you to every volunteer, donor, and community member who is helping transform this vision into a vibrant center for learning and growth.

๐Ÿ’ปโœจ Exciting Progress at Mozaic!

Our Computer Lab is coming together and becoming a welcoming space where refugees, immigrants, women, and youth can build essential digital skills for todayโ€™s world.

From learning basic computer skills and internet navigation to exploring career development tools, online learning platforms, and workplace technology, this lab will help open doors to education, employment, and greater self-sufficiency.

A heartfelt thank you to Micron Technology for their generous in-kind contribution, and to their dedicated volunteers who generously gave their time and energy to help make this vision a reality. We are equally grateful to our amazing community volunteers whose support continues to strengthen and uplift our programs.

Together, we are building pathways to opportunityโ€”one computer, one skill, and one learner at a time. ๐Ÿ’™

Heartbreaking News from Syria ๐Ÿ’”

After 13 years of painful uncertainty, the fate of Dr. Rania al-Abbasi and her six children has been confirmed.

The tragedy began when Dr. Raniaโ€™s husband, Abdul Rahman al-Yassin, offered financial assistance to a displaced family from Homs. After one of the familyโ€™s young men was arrested and tortured, Abdul Rahmanโ€™s name was reportedly mentioned during interrogation.

On March 9, 2013, Abdul Rahman was arrested. Two days later, security forces returned and detained Dr. Rania, along with her nurse, Majdolin al-Qadi, and all six of her children:

โ€ข Dima
โ€ข Intisar
โ€ข Najah
โ€ข Alaa
โ€ข Ahmad
โ€ข Layan

The entire family disappeared into detention and was never seen again.

For more than 13 years, Syrians held onto hope that at least one member of the family had survived. The confirmation of their deaths has reignited grief and anger across Syria, serving as a painful reminder of the atrocities, enforced disappearances, and terror inflicted by the Assad regime and its security apparatus.

A family was erased because they chose compassion and helped those in need.

May Allah have mercy on them all, grant their loved ones patience, and bring justice to every victim of oppression.

๐Ÿ’” A Heartbreaking Conclusion to a 13-Year Search ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡พ

The confirmation of the fate of Dr. Rania al-Abbasiโ€™s six children ends 13 years of painful uncertainty, but opens an even deeper wound. The details emerging from the investigation are heartbreaking beyond words.

Dr. Rania al-Abbasi was a Syrian dentist and former national chess champion who, along with her husband Abdulrahman al-Naimi and their six children, was arrested from their home in Damascus in March 2013. The family disappeared without a trace, and their case became one of the most well-known symbols of enforced disappearance under the Assad regime.

The National Commission has now confirmed the deaths of the six children while stating that it will not publicly release visual materials out of respect for the childrenโ€™s dignity and the familyโ€™s privacy.

May Allah have mercy on them, grant their family patience, and bring justice for every victim of enforced disappearance in Syria. ๐Ÿค๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡พ
