Excellent job this morning by everyone involved. Our shift last night was at the minimum of just two firefighters on duty and they were returning from an ambulance transport to Worcester at the time of the fire. Luckily on call and off duty members were available to staff the first fire engine. Staffing matters and very often we are understaffed and only able to respond to one emergency at a time.

Working Fire- 157 Pratts Junction Road

At 03:46 this morning Engines 5, 4 Ladder 1, Ambulance 1, C1 and 28C responded to reports of smoke in the building at 157 Pratts Junction Road. Deputy Chief Day arrived on scene and found smoke showing from a 1.5 story duplex and struck the working fire. A fire was located in the basement of one of the units and quickly extinguished. All occupants of the building safely evacuated and there were no injuries. Sterling firefighters were assisted on scene by the Clinton, West Boylston, Lancaster and Leominster Fire Departments. The fire is currently under investigation by both the District 8 Fire Investigation Unit as well as State Police detectives assigned to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
