Today we hear the story of the call of 4 of the Apostles, Peter, Andrew, James, and John. They were fishermen tending their nets after a long hard unproductive night of fishing. Then this strangely charismatic itinerate preacher comes along the shore, commendeers their boat and changes their lives forever. They gave up the trade of being fishermen that day, because they finally encountered Him for whom they had awaited their whole life to see. Jesus preached that day not to the hundreds along the shore but to the two who were in the boat with him and to their two friends. He gave them everything the world wanted for them, a spectacular catch, yet it was not the fish that were caught in the net as much as it were the fisherman who had been pulled from their tranquil life of the sea. Those with the nets were caught by the one who had nothing but truth to fish with. This is the day that these four became the catch. ............................................................................................................................................................ Hoy escuchamos la historia del llamado de 4 de los Apóstoles, Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan. Eran pescadores cuidando sus redes después de una larga, dura e improductiva noche de pesca. Entonces, este predicador itinerante extrañamente carismático llega a la orilla, encomia su barco y cambia sus vidas para siempre. Ese día abandonaron el oficio de pescadores, porque finalmente encontraron a Aquel a quien habían esperado ver toda su vida. Jesús predicó ese día no a los cientos que estaban en la orilla, sino a los dos que estaban en la barca con él y a sus dos amigos. Les dio todo lo que el mundo quería para ellos, una pesca espectacular, pero no fueron tanto los peces los que quedaron atrapados en la red sino el pescador que había sido arrancado de su tranquila vida en el mar. Los que tenían las redes fueron atrapados por aquel que no tenía nada más que la verdad para pescar. Este es el día en que estos cuatro fueron capturados.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said that the role of the priest is to call people together. He should invite them to gather around him and to listen, to come close to him, but then at the last minute when they people have gotten close... it is then that a good priest steps out of the way and points to Jesus, where as a bad priest does not and stays standing in the center of attention. St. Paul in today's first reading is reminding us of this same reality. We are not followers of Paul, nor of Peter, nor of Apollos. We are followers of Christ Jesus. Be aware when we get caught up in the cult of a personality of someone other than Christ. ............................................................................................................................................................. El arzobispo Fulton Sheen dijo una vez que el papel del sacerdote es convocar a la gente. Debe invitarlos a reunirse a su alrededor y escuchar, a acercarse a él, pero luego, en el último minuto, cuando la gente se ha acercado... es entonces cuando un buen sacerdote se hace a un lado y señala a Jesús, mientras que un mal sacerdote no lo hace y se queda de pie en el centro de atención. San Pablo, en la primera lectura de hoy, nos recuerda esta misma realidad. No somos seguidores de Pablo, ni de Pedro, ni de Apolo. Somos seguidores de Cristo Jesús. Tengamos cuidado cuando nos dejamos atrapar por el culto a una personalidad que no sea Cristo.

8 Years ago today, Bishop Burbidge sent me to Christ the Redeemer to be your pastor. Little did any of us know what God had in store for us all. I know that we as a community have experienced many blessings, as well as challenges through the past years. I am so delighted to be apart of such a faithful and engaged community. We are a family rooted in Christ. What a blessing you all. In our Gospel today we read of a possed man as he encounters Jesus. The possessed man cried out... "I know who you are–the Holy One of God!" The knowledge of a demon is radically different than the Faith of a disciple. We sometimes put ourselves down because we do not know enough about scripture or about the Faith. We feel inadequate and wish we knew more, understood better, and saw more clearly. But then I am struck that this demon has absolute clarity in who Christ is and I realize that our faith is not about our intellect. It is about our heart! Loving Jesus is far more important than knowing about Jesus. Please do not get me wrong, we should seek to know about God and about our Faith.. but that is not more important than believing in Jesus and loving Him. It is such a blessing to be apart of a community that so clearly loves Jesus! Blessings to you all and thank you for being so inspiring to me for the past 8 years and may we have many more to come! ............................................................................................................................................................ Hoy se cumplen ocho años desde que el obispo Burbidge me envió a la parroquia de Cristo Redentor para ser su párroco. Ninguno de nosotros imaginaba lo que Dios tenía reservado para todos nosotros. Sé que, como comunidad, hemos experimentado muchas bendiciones, así como desafíos, a lo largo de estos años. Me llena de alegría formar parte de una comunidad tan fiel y comprometida. Somos una familia arraigada en Cristo. ¡Qué gran bendición son todos ustedes! En el Evangelio de hoy leemos sobre un hombre poseído que se encuentra con Jesús. El hombre poseído gritó: "¡Sé que tú eres el Santo de Dios!". El conocimiento que tiene un demonio es radicalmente distinto a la fe de un discípulo. A veces nos menospreciamos porque sentimos que no sabemos lo suficiente sobre las Escrituras o sobre la fe. Nos sentimos insuficientes y desearíamos saber más, comprender mejor y ver con mayor claridad. Sin embargo, me llama la atención que ese demonio tenga una claridad absoluta sobre quién es Cristo, y me doy cuenta de que nuestra fe no depende del intelecto, ¡sino del corazón! Amar a Jesús es mucho más importante que saber cosas sobre Él. Por favor, no me malinterpreten: debemos procurar conocer a Dios y nuestra fe, pero eso no es más importante que creer en Jesús y amarle. ¡Es una gran bendición formar parte de una comunidad que ama tan claramente a Jesús! ¡Bendiciones a todos y gracias por ser una fuente de inspiración para mí durante estos ocho años; que vengan muchos más!

How quickly our amazement can turn into something completely different. We can feel threatened or insecure and maybe even be jealous if someone we know does something amazing and this can eventually lead us also to resentment and ultimately denial and rejection. "And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth." Jesus was absolutely inspiring, but then very quickly the sentiment moved from astonishment and appreciation to a confusion and skepticism. How often we have a similar interior struggle. I find that there are 2 wonderful questions to take to our prayer often... where do I feel drawn to God? and where do I find my heart resisting God? ............................................................................................................................................................. Con qué rapidez nuestro asombro puede convertirse en algo completamente diferente. Podemos sentirnos amenazados o inseguros y tal vez incluso sentirnos celosos si alguien que conocemos hace algo asombroso y esto eventualmente puede llevarnos también al resentimiento y, en última instancia, a la negación y el rechazo. "Y todos hablaban muy bien de él y se maravillaban de las palabras llenas de gracia que salían de su boca". Jesús fue absolutamente inspirador, pero luego, muy rápidamente, el sentimiento pasó del asombro y el aprecio a la confusión y el escepticismo. Cuán a menudo tenemos una lucha interior similar. Encuentro que hay 2 preguntas maravillosas para llevar a nuestra oración a menudo ... ¿Dónde me siento atraído hacia Dios? y ¿dónde encuentro mi corazón resistiendo a Dios?

All our readings today remind us to surrender to God because things do not go as we expect. We see this in Jeremiah, our first reading. He proclaims, You duped me, Lord" Jeremiah agreed to be a spokesperson for the lord, a prophet. He complains because all the messages that he is asked to give is of doom and turmoil. When he tries to be silent, he finds the message burns inside him and he yearns to let it out. In our Gospel, Peter is rebuking Jesus saying that he is not going to suffer and die... to Peter, that is not the way this is supposed to happen. Jesus responds to Peter decisively, "you are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." The message is simple... things are not going to go according to "our" plans. Life does not turn out as we expected. In our second reading St. Paul has the answer for us, "do not conform to the current age"; instead he would have us discern the will of God which is for our Good. Be open to what God wants for us and we will be better off, even if it does not seem that way at first. Or stated in Jesus' own words, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow after Jesus. ............................................................................................................................................................. Todas nuestras lecturas de hoy nos recuerdan entregarnos a Dios porque las cosas no salen como esperamos. Vemos esto en Jeremías, nuestra primera lectura. Él proclama: "Me engañaste, Señor" Jeremías accedió a ser un portavoz del señor, un profeta. Se queja porque todos los mensajes que se le pide que dé son de condenación y confusión. Cuando trata de estar en silencio, encuentra el El mensaje arde dentro de él y anhela dejarlo salir. En nuestro Evangelio, Pedro está reprendiendo a Jesús diciéndole que no va a sufrir y morir ... a Pedro, esa no es la forma en que se supone que debe suceder. Jesús responde a Pedro con decisión, "no piensas como Dios, sino como los seres humanos". El mensaje es simple ... las cosas no van a salir según "nuestros" planes. La vida no sale como esperábamos. nuestra segunda lectura San Pablo tiene la respuesta para nosotros, "No se dejen transformar por los criterios de este mundo", en cambio, debemos "distinguir cuál es la voluntad de Dios, es decir, lo que es bueno". Esté abierto a lo que Dios quiere para nosotros y seremos mejor, aunque no lo parezca al principio, o dicho en las propias palabras de Jesús, niégate a ti mismo, toma tu cruz y sigue a Jesús.

Sat, Aug. 29, 2026 - Passion of St. John the Baptist

Our Mass today begins with this prayer... "O God, who willed that Saint John the Baptist should go ahead of your Son both in his birth and in his death, grant that, as he died a Martyr for truth and justice, we, too, may fight hard for the confession of what you teach." Sin begets more sin. When we have done something wrong it is easy for us to do that wrong act again and the more we do it the easier the sin becomes. We can accustom ourselves to sin to the point that we can be completely oblivious to the harm our actions cause ourselves and others. Herod in today's reading demonstrates this for us. He promised to give anything to his step daughter, yet when she asked for the life of John the Baptist, Herod could not see past his oaths. He could have said simply, "No, I will not take this man's life." But instead he promptly sent the executioner. How far we fall. It takes courage to break the cycle of sin. Our salvation is not dependent upon human wisdom... rather on the cross of Christ. Our human weakness has been redeemed by His strength of virtue. We must simply make the choice to turn to Him and away from sin. It takes courage to break the cycle of sin in our lives. ............................................................................................................................................................ Nuestra Misa de hoy comienza con esta oración... "Dios nuestro, tú que quisiste que san Juan Bautista fuera el Precursor del nacimiento y de la muerte de tu Hijo, concédenos que, así como él dio la vida como testigo de la verdad y la justicia, también nosotros luchemos con valentía en la afirmación de tu verdad." El pecado engendra más pecado. Cuando hemos hecho algo malo, es fácil para nosotros volver a cometer ese acto malo y cuanto más lo hacemos, más fácil se vuelve el pecado. Podemos acostumbrarnos a pecar hasta el punto de que podemos ser completamente ajenos al daño que nuestras acciones nos causan a nosotros mismos y a los demás. Herodes en la lectura de hoy nos lo demuestra. Prometió darle cualquier cosa a su hijastra, pero cuando ella pidió la vida de Juan el Bautista, Herodes no pudo ver más allá de sus juramentos. Podría haber dicho simplemente: "No, no le quitaré la vida a este hombre". Pero en cambio, envió rápidamente al verdugo. Qué tan lejos caemos. Se necesita coraje para romper el ciclo del pecado. Nuestra salvación no depende de la sabiduría humana... sino de la cruz de Cristo. Nuestra debilidad humana ha sido redimida por Su fuerza de virtud. Simplemente debemos tomar la decisión de volvernos a Él y alejarnos del pecado. Se necesita coraje para romper el ciclo del pecado en nuestras vidas.

St. Paul writes in todays first reading, "The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." The cross does seem to be folly. We tend to think that the victory will go to the fastest or the strongest and not the meakest or humblest. True strength is found ultimately in love, even the love of enemies; a love that redeems even those who try to kill. Christ says so on the cross, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do." St. Pauls sums it up by saying that "the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength." The power of the cross is the power of love. This is the perfection of love, a love that pays the price for the faults of another and does not count the cost to self. This is the love of God, and our response must be gratefulness, love, and adoration. ............................................................................................................................................................. San Pablo escribe en la primera lectura de hoy: "la predicación de la cruz es una locura para los que van por el camino de la perdición; en cambio, para los que van por el camino de la salvación, para nosotros, es fuerza de Dios". La cruz parece ser una locura. Tendemos a pensar que la victoria será para el más rápido o el más fuerte y no para el más manso o el más humilde. La verdadera fuerza se encuentra finalmente en el amor, incluso en el amor a los enemigos; un amor que redime incluso a aquellos que tratan de matar. Cristo lo dice en la cruz: "Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen". San Pablo lo resume diciendo que "Porque la locura de Dios es más sabia que la sabiduría de los hombres y la debilidad de Dios es más fuerte que la fuerza de los hombres". El poder de la cruz es el poder del amor. Esta es la perfección del amor, un amor que paga el precio de las faltas de otro y no cuenta el costo para uno mismo. Este es el amor de Dios, y nuestra respuesta debe ser de agradecimiento, amor y adoración.

My coach in highschool used to say us, "the mark of champion is how hard they train when no one is watching." Jesus is saying the same thing today. "At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." Be prepared., be faithful, and do what you are supposed to do; and your reward will be great in heaven. ............................................................................................................................................................. Mi entrenador en la escuela secundaria solía decirnos, "la marca del campeón es lo duro que entrenan cuando nadie está mirando". Jesús está diciendo lo mismo hoy. "A la hora que no esperas, vendrá el Hijo del Hombre". Esté preparado, sea fiel y haga lo que se supone que debe hacer; y tu recompensa será grande en los cielos.

Today's Gospel gives me the impression that Jesus did not get along well with scribes and the Pharisees. Woe to you, scribes and Pahrisees... He calls them hypocrites and blind guides. When Jesus speaks this way He is not simply being mean nor is He letting off frustration. Jesus is speaking the truth. He is diagnosing them and trying to hold up a mirror to them so that they might see the errors of their ways. In addition Jesus is trying out of justice to reveal who they are to His disciples that they may not imitate them. He is telling the scribes and Pharisees, His Apostles and disciples, and each of us to beware of external piety and to let our interior be as pure as our exterior seems to be. ............................................................................................................................................................. El Evangelio de hoy me da la impresión de que Jesús no se llevaba bien con los escribas y fariseos. ¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos!... Los llama hipócritas y guías ciegos. Cuando Jesús habla así, no es simplemente cruel ni se deja llevar por la frustración. Jesús dice la verdad. Los diagnostica y trata de mostrarles sus errores para que vean sus caminos equivocados. Además, Jesús, por justicia, intenta revelarles quiénes son a sus discípulos para que no los imiten. Les dice a los escribas y fariseos, a sus apóstoles y discípulos, y a cada uno de nosotros, que cuidemos de la piedad externa y que dejemos que nuestro interior sea tan puro como nuestro exterior parece ser.
