Today we continue the story of Elijah and the great miracles God performed through the prophet of Israel. We see Elijah create a competition between the prophets of the pagan god Baal and himself. This spectacle was designed to teach all of Israel the error of their ways in co-mingling pagan practices with the authentic religion revealed by the one true God. It is meant to shock the onlookers, and to invite all pagan and Jew alike to return to believing in the one true God. We see in this test as well the responsive of God to our needs and the confidence Elijah has in God. At no point was fearful of taking on these 100 prophets of Baal. He fearlessly trusted that if God was asking Him to do this then God would respond in generosity. ............................................................................................................................................................ Hoy continuamos la historia de Elijah y el gran milagros que Dios realizó a través del profeta de Israel. Vemos a Elijah crear una competencia entre los profetas del dios pagano Baal y él mismo. Este espectáculo fue diseñado para enseñar a todo Israel el error de sus maneras de mezclar prácticas paganas con la religión auténtica revelada por el único Dios verdadero. Su objetivo es sorprender a los espectadores e invitar a todos los paganos y judíos por igual a volver a creer en el único Dios verdadero. También vemos en esta prueba la respuesta de Dios a nuestras necesidades y la confianza que Elías tiene en Dios. En ningún momento tuvo miedo de enfrentarse a estos 100 profetas de Baal. Confió sin temor en que si Dios le estaba pidiendo que hiciera esto, Dios respondería con generosidad.

1 Kings chapters 17 - 19 are an absolute delight to read. We were introduced to the great prophet Elijah in our first reading yesterday. In it, Elijah told King Ahab that it would not rain until the next time they spoke. Immediately following this, Elijah goes into seclusion in the desert and a great drought falls over the land. Thus begins the greatest game of hide and seek. Elijah spends a year hidden in a wadi being fed by Ravens, after a year of drought and no rain the wadi dried completely up. ............................................................................................................................................................ 1 Reyes capítulos 17-19 son una delicia absoluta para leer. Nos presentaron al gran profeta Elías en nuestra primera lectura de ayer. En él, Elijah le dijo al rey Acab que no llovería hasta la próxima vez que hablaran. Inmediatamente después de esto, Elijah se recluye en el desierto y una gran sequía cae sobre la tierra. Así comienza el mejor juego de las escondidas. Elijah pasa un año escondido en un wadi alimentado por Ravens, después de un año de sequía y sin lluvia, el wadi se secó por completo.

(Today is our annual Corpus Christi Eucharist Procession through the streets of Sterling from 3:15-5:00pm. We will bring Christ into our neighborhood and and bless our parish. At the same time we will have Eucharistic Adoration in the Church for those who prefer not to walk. Come celebrate the real and true presence of Christ in the Eucharist and pray for our community and neighborhood.) I am reminded of what Pope St. John Pual II said at the Wolrd Youth Day in Denver 1993: "Do not be afraid to go out on the streets and into public places, like the first Apostles who preached Christ and the Good News of salvation in the squares of cities, towns and villages. This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel. It is the time to preach it from the rooftops. Do not be afraid to break out of comfortable and routine modes of living, in order to take up the challenge of making Christ known in the modern metropolis. It is you who must go out into the byroads and invite everyone you meet to the banquet which God has prepared for his people. The Gospel must not be kept hidden because of fear or indifference. It was never meant to be hidden away in private. It has to be put on a stand so that people may see its light and give praise to our heavenly Father." ............................................................................................................................................................ (Hoy es nuestra Procesión Eucarística anual de Corpus Christi por las calles de Sterling de 3:15 a 5:00 p.m. Traeremos a Cristo a nuestro vecindario y bendeciremos nuestra parroquia. Ven a celebrar la presencia real y verdadera de Cristo en la Eucaristía y ora por nuestra comunidad y vecindario). Recuerdo lo que dijo el Papa San Juan Pablo II en la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud en Denver en 1993: "No tengáis miedo de salir a las calles y a los lugares públicos, como los primeros Apóstoles que predicaban a Cristo y la buena nueva de la salvación en las plazas de las ciudades, de los pueblos y de las aldeas. No es tiempo de avergonzarse del Evangelio. Es tiempo de predicarlo desde los terrados. No tengáis miedo de romper con los estilos de vida confortables y rutinarios, para aceptar el reto de dar a conocer a Cristo en la metrópoli moderna. Debéis ir a los cruces de los caminos e invitar a todos los que encontréis al banquete que Dios ha preparado para su pueblo. No hay que esconder el Evangelio por miedo o indiferencia. No fue pensado para tenerlo escondido. Hay que ponerlo en el candelero, para que la gente pueda ver su luz y alabe a nuestro Padre celestial.

Please join me in praying for the 7 men who Bishop Burbidge will ordain priests today at 11:00am: Rev. Mr. James Matthew Harbour, YA; Rev. Mr. Donghan Stan Lee; Rev. Mr. Sean Edward Mazary, YA; Rev. Mr. Eric Martin McDade, YA; Rev. Mr. Alexander Jacob Solsma; Rev. Mr. Teko Galey Teko-Agbo; Rev. Mr. Aaron Frank Zanca. Pope Leo XIV ssaid to priests in his homily on Holy Thursday, "Beloved brothers in the priesthood, we are called to serve the People of God with our whole lives." The pope went on to remind all of us that God loves us generously, mercifully and He loves unconditionally. Jesus does not ask us to repay HIm, but rather to share His gift, His love, among ourselves. Let us pray in a special way today that the Lord may bless and strengthen these 7 men so that they may give all of who they are to Christ and to His Church as they become today servants of the people of God. ............................................................................................................................................................ Jesus gives a simple but profound message in today's Gospel Passage. He is asked in a sincere way, not as a trap, Today's Gospel passage though seemingly cryptic is actually quite profound. This passage comes at the end of a series of questions that Jesus answers from the scribes, pharisees and Herodians. It makes sense that at the end of being asked these questions, Jesus might ask one of his own. It was an undisputed fact that all the parties accepted the Messiah would be from the line of David, that is he would be a "son of David." Essentially Jesus asks, How can the Messiah be called the "Son of David" when David calls Him "Lord" in such an exalted way that implies he is above David, not below him like a son would be? This actually points to one of the great mysteries of our Faith, that Jesus, the Messiah, has both a Divine nature and a human nature. You can imagine this simple question left the Pharisees, Sadducees and Herodians baffled since they did not yet understand that the Messiah could and would be both God and man. ............................................................................................................................................................ Jesús da un mensaje simple pero profundo en el Pasaje del Evangelio de hoy. Se le pregunta de manera sincera, no como una trampa, el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy, aunque aparentemente críptico, en realidad es bastante profundo. Este pasaje llega al final de una serie de preguntas que Jesús responde de los escribas, fariseos y herodianos. Tiene sentido que al final de hacerse estas preguntas, Jesús pueda hacer una propia. Era un hecho indiscutible que todas las partes aceptaron que el Mesías sería de la línea de David, es decir, él sería un "hijo de David". The Eucharist will continue to be exposed throughout the day in the church, as our community worships and adores Jesus' Body and Blood for 2 straight days. Our closing biligual Mass will be at 7:00pm tonight.) “The Eucharist is at the root of every form of holiness, and each of us is called to the fullness of life in the Holy Spirit. How many saints have advanced along the way of perfection thanks to their eucharistic devotion! … Holiness has always found its center in the sacrament of the Eucharist” - Pope Benedict XVI (Sacramentum Caritatis 94). ............................................................................................................................................................ (Today we continue our 40 hours of Eucharistic Adoration. The church will be open all day and night, the Eucharist will be exposed upon the altar for Adoration until 7pm on Thursday. Come and spend time with Jesus.) "You also realize, Venerable Brothers, that the Eucharist is reserved in churches or oratories to serve as the spiritual center of a religious community or a parish community, indeed of the whole Church and the whole of mankind, since it contains, beneath the veil of the species, Christ the invisible Head of the Church, the Redeemer of the world, the center of all hearts, by whom all things are and by whom we exist. Hence it is that devotion to the divine Eucharist exerts a great influence upon the soul in the direction of fostering a social love, in which we put the common good ahead of private good, take up the cause of the community, the parish, the universal Church, and extend our charity to the whole world because we know that there are members of Christ everywhere." Our Gospel passage today is the classic question about money. "Should we pay the census tax to Caesar or not?" Of course we all know, Jesus Elegant response, "Repay to Caesar what is what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God."But rather than focusing on the answer to this question, instead lets look at those who asked Jesus. Since I was young, I was always encouraged by my parents and my teachers to ask lots of questions. These Pharisees and Herodians are being far from sincere with this question. First, both groups are rivals and rarely ever have the same viewpoint, Secondly, you can sense the sarcasm in their questioning as they heap on insincere praise. Finally they phrase the question in such a away as to try to prevent any discussion but rather just force one answer or another. We often approach God exactly like this. We have a preconceived notion of what we think the answer should be and then insincerely ask Christ to confirm what we already"know" to be the correct answer. Today we see what happens when you try to trap Jesus. He eloquently sides steps the trap and leaves the people spell bound in the beauty of the Truth. Let us always approach our Lord with a sincere desire to hear His answer. ............................................................................................................................................................. The following is an account of the martyrdom of St. Justin 165 AD. "The Prefect Rusticus says: Approach and sacrifice, all of you, to the gods. Justin says: No one in his right mind gives up piety for impiety. The Prefect Rusticus says: If you do not obey, you will be tortured without mercy. Justin replies: That is our desire, to be tortured for Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and so to be saved, for that will give us salvation and firm confidence at the more terrible universal tribunal of Our Lord and Saviour. And all the martyrs said: Do as you wish; for we are Christians, and we do not sacrifice to idols. The Prefect Rusticus read the sentence: Those who do not wish to sacrifice to the gods and to obey the emperor will be scourged and beheaded according to the laws. The holy martyrs glorifying God betook themselves to the customary place, where they were beheaded and consummated their martyrdom confessing their Savior." ..............................................................................................................................................................
