Golden Warrior Nation is saddened to learn of the passing of longtime Sterling High School teacher and Hall of Fame coach Paul Hess on April 15.
A 1964 graduate of SHS, Hess began his career with Sterling Public Schools in 1968 and went on to leave a lasting impact on generations of students and athletes.
Hess built the Golden Warrior girls track and field program into a powerhouse from 1986 to 2001. During that time, his teams captured 12 NCIC Conference championships, eight IHSA sectional titles, and recorded five state meet trophy finishes. His athletes earned 21 individual state medals, with six relay teams also reaching the podium. The 1991 4x400-meter relay team stands among his greatest accomplishments, claiming the IHSA state championship.
He also served as head coach of the girls cross country program from 1986 to 2000, compiling an 84-25 dual meet record. His teams won five conference championships, along with three IHSA regional titles, four sectional championships, and three top finishes at the IHSA State Meet.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls.
Paul Hess leaves behind a legacy of excellence, dedication, and mentorship that will continue to inspire the Sterling community for years to come.
