On Wednesday a milestone in the journey towards the conservation of the Arabian Leopard was reached, as the Royal Commission of AlUla (RCU) and the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) broke ground on the future Arabian Leopard exhibit in Washington D.C. Catmosphere founder HRH Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud joined the ceremony, the start of a new chapter for the critically endangered subspecies.

The Smithsonian Arabian Leopard conservation launch and groundbreaking is an important moment in RCU’s long-term mission to safeguard the critically endangered Arabian Leopard. With fewer than 120 Arabian Leopards remaining in the wild, this partnership is part of a wider conservation effort that wil connect research, conservation breeding, Saudi capacity building and public awareness.

We are pleased to see the progress of this partnership and look forward to it building the science, expertise and awareness needed for the Arabian Leopard’s long-term recovery.

شهد يوم الأربعاء محطة بارزة في مسيرة الحفاظ على النمر العربي، حيث وضعت الهيئة الملكية لمحافظة العلا حجر الأساس لمعرض النمر العربي المستقبلي في واشنطن العاصمة. وشاركت صاحبة السمو الملكي الأميرة ريما بنت بندر آل سعود، مؤسسة كاتموسفير في مراسم تدشين المشروع، إيذاناً ببدء فصل جديد في جهود حماية هذه السلالة المهددة بالانقراض بشكل حرج.
يمثل إطلاق برنامج سميثسونيان للحفاظ على النمر العربي ووضع حجر الأساس للمعرض محطة مهمة ضمن جهود الهيئة الملكية لمحافظة العلا لحماية النمر العربي. ومع تبقي أقل من ١٢٠ نمراً عربياً في الطبيعة، تأتي هذه الشراكة ضمن جهود أوسع للحفاظ على هذا النوع، حيث تجمع بين البحث العلمي، وبرامج الإكثار لأغراض الحفظ، وبناء القدرات في المملكة العربية السعودية، وتعزيز الوعي المجتمعي.
يسعدنا أن نشهد التقدم المحرز في هذه الشراكة، ونتطلع إلى أن تسهم في بناء قاعدة علمية وخبرات متخصصة ووعي أوسع، بما يدعم برنامج النمر العربي على المدى البعيد.

نيكوريل ماينزانيز زميلة في برنامج زمالة كاتموسفير و كونزيرفيشن نيشن، ومنسقة الرصد والتقييم في "فيكتوريا فولز وايلدلايف تراست"، حيث تساهم في دعم أبحاث الحفاظ على الحياة البرية القائمة على الأدلة، والعمل ميدانيًا للحد من الصراع بين الإنسان والحياة البرية. 🌿🦁

في منطقة هوانغي الغربية في زيمبابوي، يتشارك البشر والأسود نفس الأرض، مما ينشأ عنه صراعات. تعمل نيكول على تخفيف حدة هذه الصراعات، ودعم سبل العيش المحلية، ومراقبة سلوك الأسود لتوجيه قرارات الحفاظ على البيئة بشكل فعّال. كما تعمل مع المجتمعات المحلية، وتزودها بالبيانات التي تحتاجها لحماية أراضيها دون التسبب في صراعات. 🦁🏘️

Flying drones to track lions in Zimbabwe.🦁

Nicorll Maenzanise is a Catmosphere Fellow with Conservation Nation, and the Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator for Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, where she supports evidence-based conservation research and works to manage human-wildlife conflict on the ground. 🌿🦁

In Hwange West, Zimbabwe, people and lions share the same land, which can lead to human-lion conflicts. She's working to mitigate these conflicts, supporting local livelihoods, and monitoring lion behavior to guide conservation decisions that work. She works with local communities and gives them the data they need to protect their land; avoiding conflict. 🦁🏘️

يُعرف الببر في مجتمع بوري بالهند باسم "أبو باتي" - أي العم الكبير. ليس مفترساً، بل قريب مُحترم. يُتجنب النطق باسمه بصوت عالٍ، أو أي شيء يُعتبر مُسيئًا له، إذ يُعتقد أن وجوده يُراقبنا دائماً.

تدرس جولي، إحدى زميلاتنا في برنامج زمالة كاتموسفير و كونزيرفيشن نيشن، طبيعة موطنها والحيوانات التي تتخذه موطناً لها، حيث تتشابك المعتقدات القديمة والتنوع البيولوجي بشكل وثيق. 🌳🤝

Don't speak this animal's name aloud! 🐅

Among the Bori community in India, the tiger is known as Abo Pate — Big Paternal Uncle. Not a predator. A respected relative. Speaking his name aloud, or anything disrespectful, is avoided — his presence is believed to be always watching.

Catmosphere with Conservation Nation Fellow Julee Jerang is studying her homeland’s landscape and the animals who call it home — where ancestral belief and biodiversity are deeply intertwined. 🌳🤝
