🛠️ A new school year means another year of building Southeastern Michigan’s skilled workforce.

This week, students returned to the classroom at Southeast Michigan Construction Academy (SEMCA), ready to continue their training and take the next step toward careers in the skilled trades.

For ABC SEMI members, these first days are an important reminder of what workforce development looks like in action. The students learning in SEMCA classrooms today are preparing to become the electricians, carpenters, HVACR professionals and construction leaders our industry will rely on tomorrow.

We’re proud to support the next generation of skilled professionals — and grateful to the ABC SEMI member contractors who employ, mentor and invest in them along the way.

Last week, ABC Southeastern Michigan was honored to welcome U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon as part of her Great American Comeback Tour!

Secretary McMahon’s visit began with a roundtable discussion alongside ABC SEMI President & CEO Keith Ledbetter and local business leaders, focused on the workforce, education and the critical role skilled trades play in building a strong future for Michigan and our country.

The conversation continued in our Thomas J. Campbell Liberty Center with a fireside chat featuring Secretary McMahon and Captain Mike Bouchard, bringing together local leaders for an important discussion on opportunity, workforce development and preparing the next generation for successful careers.

We’re proud to provide a place where national, state and local leaders can come together with the construction industry to have meaningful conversations about the issues shaping our workforce and our communities.

Yesterday, Beneco brought Prevailing Wage 101 to ABC SEMI’s Liberty Center, providing members with insight into prevailing wage requirements, compliance and key considerations for contractors working on prevailing wage projects.

A special thank you to the Beneco team for traveling in from Pittsburgh and Connecticut to lead the session, share their expertise and serve as a resource for our members.

We appreciate Beneco’s partnership and their commitment to helping ABC contractors stay informed and prepared!

More than 100 ABC SEMI members and future members joined us in Freedom Hall yesterday for our Annual Member Picnic!🏗️

Along with lunch from National Coney Island, attendees heard important updates on ABC SEMI, the construction industry and what’s ahead from our staff and ABC of Michigan President Ron Kendall.

We were also honored to welcome special guests Mike Bouchard, candidate for Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, and former North Dakota Governor the Honorable Doug Burgum.

A highlight of the afternoon was celebrating the ABC SEMI Construction Leadership Institute Class of 2026 and recognizing their commitment to growing as leaders in our industry. Congratulations to this year’s graduates!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an afternoon of connections, industry updates and celebrating the people who continue to move the merit shop construction industry forward. We’re proud of where ABC SEMI is today — and even more excited about what’s ahead!
