Stephentown Historical Society The Stephentown Historical Society was formed in 1973 to bring together those interested in the history of the town.

Since then, members have been gathering artifacts, documents, photographs, and historical and genealogical information to be preserved, displayed, and studied.

Caitlin Sheldon will give a talk and demonstration on Dressing the Revolutionary Lady on Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road. This gathering of the Stephentown Historical Society is free and open to the public. For information or directions, phone (518) 339-6485.

Sheldon is a full time librarian who spends her free time sewing historically accurate period clothing and traveling to museums, historic sites, and costume events. This program was developed to tie into the USA and Saratoga 250 celebrations. It features an explanation of the fashions of the mid- to late-1770s and a dressing demonstration of all of the layers and accessories of a fashionable lady’s toilette from the time.

Historian Michael Marchand will give a talk on Rensselaer County in the Civil War on Sunday, April 12, at 2 p.m. at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road. This gathering of the Stephentown Historical Society is free and open to the public. For information or directions, phone (518) 339-6485.

Marchand, whose ancestors lived in Rensselaer County since 1730, has studied the rich history of the area and has been collecting artifacts with a focus on the Civil War era. The 2nd,125th and 169th NY were regiments that fought along with the 21st NY Cavalry out of Troy. Company E, of the 125th NY, was recruited from Stephentown and other small towns in the southeast corner of the county. The regiment served from 1862 to 1865 … from Harper’s Ferry to Appomattox.

Marchand will also present a large display of pictures and artifacts from Rensselaer County’s Civil War military and industrial past. He encourages folks to bring pictures and letters they may have of their soldier ancestors.

Bobbie Reno will give a talk on Colonel Henry Knox and the Cannon Caravan on Sunday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road. This gathering of the Stephentown Historical Society is free and open to the public. For information or directions, phone (518) 339-6485.

Reno will tell of how Henry Knox, a 25-year-old Boston bookseller with an interest in military history, organized and led the transport of some 60 tons of artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in December 1775 and January 1776. Sturdy men with barges and sledges, horses and oxen successfully delivered all 59 cannon to General Washington. The artillery deployment in Cambridge, Roxbury and Dorchester Heights by the Continental Army led to the evacuation of Boston by the British forces and their Loyalist followers.

She will also tell of Cuff Ashport, an enlisted man in the Continental Army, with his story of patriotism and the fight for freedom against the odds.

Reno is a life-long resident of the Albany area. She is an artist and the author of several children's books. and has been the East Greenbush Town Historian since 2016.

Hope you can join us!

Gabriele will give a talk on the history of war dogs on Sunday, February 1, at 2 p.m. at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road. This gathering of the Stephentown Historical Society is free and open to the public. For information or directions, phone (518) 339-6485.

Although dogs have been used in combat for more than 4000 years, beginning in Egypt, Gabriele will focus on their use by the United States military in the 20th and 21st centuries. He will explain the traits needed to make a dog suitable for military duty and the sorts of work they do, and how they differ from police dogs.

Gabriele is a retired physical education teacher who has switched subjects and pursues a long-held love of history to explore various topics. He also is a fan of Lionel model trains and brings a box of restored Lionel cars to his presentations for giving away.
