For some, Retirement R&R means "rest and relaxation." For others, "roll and romp."

These were some of the farewell gifts the horses and I received. My heart is full of gratitude. I am so very impressed, and deeply touched, by the artwork and the writing (there were some other notes, too) and the thoughtfulness. Hugs to all of you!! I will treasure all of these things forever. (Make sure you read the caption for each photo.)

We had our final party yesterday: the traditional horseshoe picture frames decorated with their little gems, a lively horse trivia game, and cocoa, cookies, cake. Outside, big snowflakes sifted down as the horses ate their hay, making us feel like we were in a snow globe. Thanks to everyone who helped. All the riders and other participants in the Little Gems family over the years have been talented, dedicated, and delightful to work with, but the 2024 crew had a special spirit. I couldn't have asked for a lovelier final event. (I'll make another post tomorrow thanking you all for the beautiful cards and gifts, too.) As I said yesterday, I will miss you all. Please do come and visit Java and Lou when you can. And I look forward to hearing about your future riding adventures. Always remember to keep calm and walk/trot/canter on! Love, Janet

Lou's last ride. He started off willing and happy, but a minute after this video, he stopped abruptly and bucked, which he had never before done in a lesson. The rider came off, and bravely got back on (luckily uninjured). But then, at an easy walk, Lou bucked again. This time the rider sat it, but I had her dismount immediately. Lou was saying, loud and clear, that at long last he is ready to retire. He can still do unmounted lessons for the next few weeks, but his back can no longer reliably bear the weight of even a small rider. This horse with so much heart has earned his retirement, and he will get plenty of care and attention. If anyone wants to bring him a treat, his favorites are pillow peppermints (he can't eat the hard kind anymore), shredded carrots, and cut-up apples.

Java once again helps a rider achieve the miraculous moment of the first-ever posting trot.

In these last few weeks of the season, Lou has been doing a lot of unmounted lessons. Fun for everyone!

Why post a video with the rider and horse so far away you can hardly see them? Because it shows independence! A big milestone is being able to ride alone, without the instructor right beside you. Good job!

This student's first full groundwork lesson. Task: Trot with the "invisible lead rope." Well done!
