There’s something sacred about watching a student step into their calling.

Josiah Goddard (Class of 2023) spent just one year at Eukarya Christian Academy, but the Lord used it deeply. After graduation, a mission trip to Uganda and discipleship training with Youth With A Mission helped confirm his heart for full-time missions.

He calls ECA a “safe lions’ den” — a place where students are prepared for the real world, rooted in Christ.

In our Winter Issue of Vox Civitatis, we ask a harder question than “What do you believe?” We ask: How are you living?

Drawing from Aristotle, Aquinas, and the deep well of Christian tradition, this article explores what it truly means to live virtuously in a broken and weary world. Virtue is not aesthetic. It does not trend. It will not applaud you. It is formed quietly—through habits, through repetition, through choosing love when it costs you.

What does courage look like when you’re exhausted?
What is patience in the middle of family life?
Is holiness found in opinions—or in habits?

To “Live Like Lions” is to refuse outrage, numbness, and spiritual laziness. It is to choose integrity when no one sees, gentleness when you are frayed, and love when it demands something of you. Virtue is not perfection. It is direction. It is the hidden bravery of ordinary goodness.

In a world overflowing with information, the real task of education—both at home and in the classroom—is not simply to fill minds, but to shape hearts.

To teach our children to desire the right things means guiding them toward what is good, true, and beautiful. It means showing them, through word and deed, what it looks like to love truth more than comfort, goodness more than gain, and beauty more than distraction.

Parents, grandparents, mentors, teachers—all of us play a part in this sacred work. Every conversation at the dinner table, every act of kindness witnessed, every moment of correction offered in love, becomes part of a child’s formation.

The world is teaching our children to want. We must teach them what is worth wanting.

“The world is indeed full of peril… but still there is much that is fair. And though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”

Tolkien reminds us that darkness is real — peril, loss, and grief touch every life. But he also sees the other side: love, hope, and goodness persist. What he describes is not naive optimism; it is the recognition that love, when tested, can deepen, become more courageous, and shine brighter against the shadows.

For families, this is profoundly practical. The patience of a parent, the forgiveness between siblings, the gentle guidance of a grandparent — these small acts, especially amid difficulty, are the daily ways love grows stronger. Even the simplest moments, when offered faithfully, echo the light of Christ into a world that often seems broken.

Today, look for the quiet places where love continues to exist — in your home, your relationships, yourself. Choose to nurture it. Speak it. Protect it. Let your awareness of its presence transform ordinary moments into acts of enduring hope.
