Last week, Yampa Valley Fly Fishers members teamed up with Trout Unlimited staff to host two days of Trout Unlimited’s STREAM program with the Boys & Girls Club of both Craig and Steamboat at Fetcher Pond. 🎣

Led by Trout Unlimited’s national team, the kids spent the day learning about aquatic insects, practicing their casting skills, exploring the stream, and collecting water samples. With the high temperatures and smoky conditions, they even learned the proper way to handle a trout—thanks to our trusty green trout cutout!

It was incredible to see so much curiosity, confidence, and excitement grow throughout the two days. A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to help introduce the next generation to the outdoors and the importance of healthy rivers. We can’t wait to do it again!

Note: The STREAM program had special permission to collect microbiome water samples from the Yampa River despite the voluntary fishing closure.

🌡️ Before you cast, check the water temp.

Warm water puts extra stress on trout, and even a quick catch-and-release can become fatal. Carry a thermometer, fish early, and know when it’s time to call it a day.

💚 Below 65°F: Fish on.
⚠️ 65–68°F: Handle fish with extra care—land fish quickly, keep them wet, and skip the hero shots.
🛑 Above 68°F: Give trout a break.

Please check current closures and water conditions before heading out, and consider fishing higher-elevation waters while temperatures remain high.

Healthy fisheries depend on all of us making good decisions. Thanks for doing your part to protect our trout. 🎣

We’re so excited to welcome Anders Halverson, author of An Entirely Synthetic Fish, for a talk on the fascinating (and complicated) history of rainbow trout—and what it reveals about our relationship with the natural world.

We’ll also hear from Ryan Herbert, local outfitter and owner of Fly Fish Travels, who will share stories and insights from fishing adventures in Belize, Honduras, and Louisiana.
