Final on Day 4 — October 18th | Jr. NAD Conference ✨

What a powerful day to remember! We kicked off the morning preparing for the Jr. NAD General Assembly, where our observers and delegates came together to discuss, reflect, and vote on the top 10 priorities that matter most to Deaf youth nationwide. After meaningful discussions and collaboration, the group selected the top 5 proposals that will move forward to the NAD Conference next summer in San Francisco! 🙌

It was inspiring to witness our young leaders in action — confidently sharing their perspectives, supporting one another, and making decisions that will help shape the future of our community. 💪

After a successful assembly, students and staff enjoyed exploring the authentic beauty of downtown Santa Fe, soaking in the local culture, food, and art. The evening wrapped up with a heartfelt banquet celebration, recognizing outstanding youth and community members who have shown exceptional leadership, advocacy, and commitment to giving back. 💫

This day truly embodied what Jr. NAD is all about — empowerment, connection, and leadership in action. 💙

Day 3 – October 17th at the Jr. NAD Conference 🌟
Day 3 was filled with learning, connection, and inspiration! We started with four incredible breakout sessions:

💫 Dr. Jennifer Herbold – Leadership and Compassion
🎭 Dr. Renca Dunn – Self-Expression
📞 Sean Sinderholm – New Mexico Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, showcasing telecommunications equipment for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals
🧩 Meredith Burke – Advocacy for the DeafDisabled community

In the afternoon, students focused on their special projects, preparing for the Jr. NAD Ambassador Competition, ASL Entertainment, General Assembly, and Banquet — all part of their final video projects! 🎬

Meanwhile, our Jr. NAD Advisor Academy gathered to prepare for the upcoming General Assembly, ensuring they are ready to guide and support their students the next day. 👏🤝

We were also honored to welcome Jojo Savea, who expanded students’ understanding of cultural wealth through her presentation on Samoan and Pacific Islander cultures — reminding us all of the beauty of diversity and community. 🌺🌊

We wrapped up the evening with the Jr. NAD Ambassador Competition, where students took the stage with confidence and heart, showcasing their leadership growth. 💫

Day 2 – October 16th at the Jr. NAD Conference 🌄
We started the day with a refreshing hike at Aspen Vista, taking in the breathtaking mountain views and connecting with nature. During our lunch break, students had some downtime to focus on their special projects — from roundtable discussions and ASL entertainment to filming sessions and the Jr. NAD Ambassador competition prep. 🎬🤟

In the afternoon, we visited the New Mexico History Museum to explore the rich and unique history of the state — such a meaningful way to learn more about the culture that surrounds us. 🏛️✨

After returning to NMSD, we slowed down for an inspiring session with guest speaker Alana Beal from T-Mobile, who shared powerful insights about leadership and motivation. We wrapped up the evening with some fun basketball games while Jr. NAD advisors gathered for discussions on how to continue uplifting their students throughout the school year. 🏀💫

Day 1 – October 15th at the Jr. NAD Conference ✨
We kicked things off with an inspiring Opening Ceremony featuring Dr. Jennifer Herbold, Superintendent of the New Mexico School for the Deaf, and Nathan Gomme, Executive Director of the NM Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

We were honored to have Indigenous guests open the evening with a Land Acknowledgment, recognizing the Native lands we gathered on and grounding us in respect and gratitude. 🌾

Our amazing NMSD Jr. NAD President and Vice President hosted as emcees for the evening, setting the tone for an unforgettable start. One of our NMSD students, who is Indigenous, also shared his culture by inviting his family to serve traditional fry bread — giving everyone a taste of authentic New Mexico! 🌽✨

The night wrapped up with fun icebreaker activities where students and advisors connected, laughed, and built new friendships — the perfect way to close out Day 1! 💫

We are quickly approaching a milestone which is exciting! Hello, I am Linsay Darnall Jr. A member of the National Association of the Deaf, just like you. On August 25th, the milestone is that the NAD will celebrate our 145th year anniversary! Let us mark this occasion and recognize all individual members, State Associations, affiliates, and our allies that made this a reality. Let us take this opportunity to reflect on our achievements these past 145 years and that can’t be done without people like you. The NAD would like to take this occasion to thank you! However, we understand there are a lot to be done. So, what do we do from this point? There will be NAD Leadership Training Conference coming up and the NAD Conference after that. Let us all participate in the process where we can bring your thoughts, ideas, and visions to be shared to determine the next steps to be taken. Let the lessons that we have learned these past 145 years be the guiding light upon the path that we will tread leading up to our future successes. To conclude, let us, including the NAD and all of you, wish each other a Happy Birthday!

Last day magic at YLC 2025!
We closed out an unforgettable week with a beautiful banquet featuring an inspiring keynote by NAD President Lisa Rose. Awards were handed out, the dance floor lit up, and we celebrated every moment of growth and friendship.

To top it all off, everyone received their traditional YLC sweater — a symbol of the memories, leadership, and legacy we’re taking with us.
