Over the past few weeks, we’ve received many calls asking the NAACP for legal assistance. We want our community to know that when seeking legal redress, documentation and preparation are extremely important.
If you believe your civil rights have been violated, here are the proper steps to take:
• Document EVERYTHING. Keep copies of emails, text messages, letters, screenshots, photos, videos, police reports, write-ups, medical records, or any evidence connected to the incident.
• Write down a timeline, Record dates, times, locations, names of individuals involved, witnesses, and exactly what occurred while it is still fresh in your memory.
• Remain professional and avoid retaliation. Do not make threats, engage in harassment, or post sensitive details publicly while your matter is being reviewed.
• File complaints through the proper channels. Depending on the issue, this may include HR departments, school boards, housing authorities, local government offices, or law enforcement agencies.
• Understand that the NAACP is an advocacy organization. While we may help connect individuals with resources, guidance, or referrals, we are not a law firm and cannot guarantee legal representation.
• Be prepared to provide supporting information. When contacting the branch, please be ready to share your documentation, timeline, and any steps already taken regarding the matter.
Our goal is to help ensure that people know their rights, understand the process, and are connected with the proper resources when possible.
An informed community is a stronger community. ❤️🖤💚
