Imagine how you would feel as an enslaved person learning that you were considered “free from slavery” two and a half years before. No one told you, you were still treated as a slave, and looking around- all of the pieces of a slave society still exist. The union soldiers were the first you heard of your freedom. Where would you go? How will you create a new life for you and your family? how do you keep your community from descending back into slavery? All of these things to consider plus so many more. If you haven’t celebrated Juneteenth before, find a local celebration and take part. It is a spiritual humanitarian celebration of freedom for all. ❤️🖤💚

According to the U.N., hate speech is any communication that attacks or discriminates against a person or group based on religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, color, descent, gender, or other identity factors. It’s a broad definition designed to cover various forms of incitement.

We can unite against intolerance and discrimination, thereby fostering a culture of peace. Fostering peace is world changing! As we stand up to hate speech, we make the world more tolerant, less discriminatory and more kind. The ripple effect spreads love, tolerance, kindness and empathy.

Today, June 15th, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). I’m grateful that North Carolina is recognizing this important day through an official proclamation from Governor Josh Stein. It sends a clear message that our state values its older adults and takes the issue of elder abuse seriously.

As the Governor’s proclamation reminds us, “each resident has a responsibility to report any suspicion of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.” If you ever have concerns, you can contact local law enforcement and/or your county’s Adult Protective Services (APS). Find your APS office here:
https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/social-services/adult-services/adult-protective-services.

My office works closely with the NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to train APS staff statewide on how we can support cases involving suspected investment, charity, notary, and trademark fraud. These types of fraud can be reported directly to the Secretary of State’s Office. Complaint forms are available at: https://sosnc.gov/forms/bytitle/TipAndComplaint.

Together, we can help protect North Carolina’s seniors and strengthen the safety of our communities. (~EFM)

One of the most meaningful moments of the evening was presenting a donation of $1,007.23 to Foundation of Hope Ministries. These funds were raised through our annual Geranium Sale and represent the generosity of our members, customers, volunteers, and community supporters. Foundation of Hope continues to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families throughout our community, and we are honored to support their mission. Thank you to Karen Kidd and everyone involved with this incredible organization for the work you do each and every day. 💙💜🌱🌸📷🌞
