Today, a young woman walked into the Food Bank office carrying a baby on her hip and holding the hand of 3- or 4-year-old child. "I need some help," she whispered. She sat down at the desk, gently shushing her children.
"I was at the grocery store yesterday," she explained. "My SNAP card was declined." She left the whole cart of groceries at the checkout and drove to the DFCS office to find out why the card declined. She was told her benefits had been cancelled. They couldn't explain why, only that she would have to re-apply and the current wait time will be at least eight weeks.
"My boyfriend left us and I don't make enough money to pay for daycare and buy food for the next eight weeks," she choked, "I don't know what to do."
After filling out a short intake form, she learned she could receive a meal box when needed, as frequently as every seven days. We could make her appointments around her working hours; we are even open on Saturdays to serve our clients.
As the pantry staff loaded her first meal box into the car, her preschooler noticed the fresh strawberries at the top of the box. "Lookie mama, star'berries! My favorite!" With a giggle the child bounced excitedly in the car seat. "Thank you," she whispered. "We wouldnβt make it without you."
There are many families like hers β living paycheck-to-paycheck but making it β until something goes wrong. A partner leaves, a car breaks down, a wage earner gets sick or injured, and suddenly everything is in jeopardy.
Fortunately, we can step in and help families through the rough periods. But we need your help! We are currently serving close to 800 families per week! These are not lazy people, they are not failing at life, they are doing everything they know to do to make a living, many working multiple jobs. But as prices soar and social agencies are de-funded, more families find themselves without a safety net.
These families are your neighbors, attend your church, they serve you at restaurants, at grocery & retail stores, they clean your offices, they take care of your children. You can help us help them.
