IN CELEBRATION OF JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth is more than a celebration. It is a sacred reminder of freedom delayed, truth revealed, dignity restored, and justice still being pursued.
On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received the news that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. That moment reminds us that freedom declared is not always freedom delivered. It also reminds us that the work of justice must continue until every person, every family, and every community has the opportunity to live with dignity, purpose, and hope.
For me, Juneteenth carries deep meaning. Since I was 21 years old, as a young private newly serving in the military, I have had the privilege and responsibility of leading young people from all walks of life. I have seen young people rise through discipline, opportunity, encouragement, and truth. I have also seen how injustice, limited access, and unequal systems can place unnecessary weight on their shoulders.
That is why the work of Youth Career Commission Inc. matters so deeply.
At YCCI, we are committed to helping young people understand their history, recognize their worth, and prepare for their future. We especially remain committed to uplifting young Black youth whose ancestors endured bo***ge, injustice, and exclusion, yet still built, believed, resisted, and dreamed for generations they would never see.
Juneteenth reminds us that our youth were never meant to be less. They were never meant to dream small, live beneath their potential, or accept limitations placed on them by history, systems, or circumstances. They are heirs of strength, courage, creativity, intelligence, and resilience.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, we honor the past, but we also accept the responsibility of the present. We must continue teaching truth, opening doors, building opportunities, strengthening families, challenging injustice, and preparing the next generation to lead with purpose.
Juneteenth is remembrance.
Juneteenth is responsibility.
Juneteenth is resilience.
Juneteenth is a call to keep building.
May we never forget how far we have come, and may we never grow weary in the work of helping our youth go even further.
