We are deeply saddened by the passing of Bill Rasmussen, founder of ESPN, longtime friend of APDA, and a dedicated ambassador for the Parkinson’s disease community.

After publicly disclosing his PD diagnosis in 2019, Bill used his voice and platform to raise awareness, inspire optimism, and help others affected by the disease. Around that time, APDA’s Dr. Gilbert had the opportunity to interview Bill, and he shared this advice for anyone living with PD:

“Some people hear the word Parkinson’s and they think, ‘Life’s over. I can’t do anything else.’ And that’s far from the truth. Don’t let your brain say, ‘That’s the end. I can’t do anything.’ Let your brain take the challenge and say, ‘Now what can I do? What do I have to change so I can continue to live a healthy and positive life?’ Giving up is not an option, and I think a positive attitude is what counts.”

Our heartfelt condolences are with Bill’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. We are truly honored that APDA has been designated for memorial gifts in lieu of flowers.

💙 Caring for someone with Parkinson’s is deeply meaningful — but it can also be exhausting, emotional, and full of tough moments.

If you’re looking for guidance, encouragement, or practical ways to support your loved one and yourself, Being a Parkinson’s Care Partner is a great article offering three different care partners' perspectives about how they navigate the daily highs and lows, and what they’ve learned along the way.

Every PD journey is unique, but hearing from others who truly understand can make you feel more supported and less alone.

Last week, Leslie A. Chambers, our President & CEO, was thrilled to have the opportunity to host a PD Essentials educational program at her parents’ senior community, Grand Living at Tamaya, to ensure residents know that APDA is here to help anyone facing Parkinson’s disease (PD).

Fighting PD is not just important to Leslie as President & CEO of APDA, but also because her brother, Bob Jr., was diagnosed with Young Onset PD in 2014 at age 51. Supporting the PD community is a family commitment—Bob Jr.’s 5 sons made generous contributions to APDA this year to honor their father, and Leslie’s parents, siblings, children, and aunt have also made donations over the years! We are so grateful for Leslie and her family. 💙

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Carol Walton, a leader, advocate, and champion for the Parkinson’s community. Inspired by her father’s Parkinson’s diagnosis in the 1980s, Carol dedicated decades of her life to advancing Parkinson’s research and raising awareness. As longtime President and CEO of The Parkinson’s Alliance, she led the Parkinson’s Unity Walk for more than 20 years, helping raise millions of dollars for research while bringing people together and shining a powerful light on Parkinson’s disease. Her dedication, determination, and passion made a lasting difference, and her impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

We are deeply grateful for all Carol did to move the Parkinson’s community forward. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to her family and loved ones, and to the many people across the PD community who knew Carol. We celebrate Carol’s life and legacy and all she did to bring us closer to a world without Parkinson’s.
