Night is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is extremely intelligent and high energy, and needs to expend energy constructively with interactive play sessions 3-4X/day. In addition to playtime, this cat would also benefit from mental exercise from activities such as puzzle toys/games, lick mats, or clicker training. Without providing activity for his mind and body, the cat may react with rough play, potentially resulting in bite/scratch incidents. It is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with feline body language, overstimulation, rough play, and who have the time to invest in managing these behaviors on a consistent basis to avoid (further) bite/scratch incidents.

What my friends at ACC say about me:
My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet!
It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children.
I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.
I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats.
I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

A volunteer writes: Night's always in the middle of a big project but welcomes visitors because interruptions aren't only welcome, they're celebrated. As a delightfully busy and established multitasker, Night favors a walk and nuzzle technique that allows for his preferred full body cuddles while he does his seemingly infinite cat work. Coincidentally, Night's the type of cat I dream about cuddling with - he's big and furry with unprecedented softness. Thankfully for me, Night is good natured and affectionate so certainly up for some cuddles, but he doesn't just want to be in the center of the action, he wants to be the center of the action. Tossing his toys and snuggling them up to his face, Night purposefully carries them around his condo as he decides on his next project. The one he's looking forward to most of all is finding his forever family.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 7/17/25 FB79
Very sweet boy. Night is in his kennel with a relaxed face and body as he lays in his carrier. He meows and slow blinks as i speak to him softly. He has no interest in treats and continues to slow blink as i reach in to pet the top of his head and cheeks for a brief moment.

7/22/25
Big sweet boy. He is crouched on his perch today, a bit subdued with snot in his nose. He allows petting along his head and back while leaning in gently and remaining otherwise in his crouched position. He eats his temptation treats today but he ignores his toy. Did well today!

7/24/25 FB79
Today, Night displayed the same behaviors as the previous enrichment note.

8/27/25 FB61
Night is showing consistent signs of overstimulation at this time. They do not need socialization, these behaviors are likely to continue in a home environment and this is not an indication that this cat is under socialized. They are a cat who may be sensitive to physical or environmental stimuli. They will benefit from plenty of non-contact, interactive playtime and mental stimulation in their new home.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,Curious,Timid

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Overstimulation,Fearful

Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyers for more information.

Night was brought in today by the cat sitter after the owner stated they did not want the cat anymore. During the two week stay, Night had 2 scratch incidents and litterbox accidents.

The cat sitter stated that she believes Night was fearful and/or territorial. During the first week of Night being in the home, Night scratched the cat sitter's hand after being pet for too long. On 07/07/2025, the cat sitter was walking past Night in order to feed him. Night ran up to the cat sitter scratching her heel of her left foot while hissing and then ran away. The scratch broke skin and she cleaned and disinfected the scratch at home.

Night is also known to go after the resident cat in the home. None of these incidents breaking skin but cat sitter reported that he would swat at the resident cat and chase her, not allowing her to enter certain rooms. This behavior did not occur with the female cat that came from the same home as him.

Night had access to 2 litterboxes in the home. They were located in the bathroom and kitchen. They were uncovered with scented, clumping, clay litter. Night is known to spray on surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. He also would have litterbox accidents. Night would urinate on the cat mat and defecate in the bathtub daily. The litterbox was scooped 1-2 times a day. The litterbox was relocated in a tucked away location.

7/26/25
After settling into the shelter and having his litter box habits monitored for 2 weeks, Night appeared to have 4 accidents in which he went outside of the litter box and on the linens in his cage, 3 of which were consecutive. Otherwise he has been using the litter box consistently. Based off of the type of accident he was having, the noted behavior challenges, and observed territorial behaviors as an unneutered male cat - there is a potential for the accidents and defecation in the bathtub to be scent marking and territorial behaviors as he was also spraying in the bathroom. While its not guaranteed, being altered will help with the hormonal urges to act on these behaviors.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children,Single-pet home,Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Night was hunched on the top of his perch as the assessor approached, body and face tense with his tail wrapped around his paws. Night began vocalizing softly when spoken to and he leaned forward to sniff the air as the kennel door opened. Night sniffed the scratcher tool when offered and he begins to tolerate petting while leaning away and tilting his ears, eyes squinting. When the assessor began rubbing his cheeks and chin Night began to lean in, his ears shifting back forward and his body softening slightly. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. Night is curious but unsure and needs a bit more time to warm up to the shelter environment.

8/17/25
Inside of the den Woody, has a tense body with hunched in shoulders., a tightly wrapped tail around his legs wide dilated eyes and forward ears when the assessor lifts the den cover for a better view. Woody immediately hisses when the assessor slowly brings in the tool for contact, and when pet down his head and back, he snaps his head and attempts to bite the tool while hissing and his ears are now flat to his head. Woody very briefly tolerates some pets on his cheeks before he kisses once again with wide dilated eyes as he starts to lip lick. Pick up was not attempted at this time in attempt to limit FAS.

Due to prior owner history (see separate notes) and a bite/scratch history we feel that this cat will do best in an adult only home with experienced cat parents.

Ollie Needs A Quiet Experienced Home To Give Him Space! The owner reported that while he was walking down the stairs, Ollie approached from behind and bit his legs multiple times, holding on and releasing repeatedly. When the owner attempted to remove Ollie from his legs, the cat redirected by biting and scratching his hands. The owner reported that Ollie has been prescribed two types of behavioral medications. He was unable to recall the name of the first medication. The second was gabapentin (100mg), which was administered at the highest recommended dose but proved ineffective.

His preferred scratching surfaces include cardboard and rough rope materials. Ollie received interactive playtime multiple times per month and was fed a combination of wet and dry food. While he displays a confident personality, it’s important to note that Ollie has exhibited some behavioral issues, including scratching and biting people.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:
08.23
Ollie is growling in his den when staff approaches. Staff shuts the portal to Ollie's den in order to clean his kennel and in response he snarls, yowls, and claws at the portal from inside the den. Staff does their best to stay out of Ollie's vision while cleaning to do what they can to mitigate stress but Ollie continues to growl, hiss and scratch inside the den. When staff is done they close the kennel door and open the den portal with the hook from a safe distance, ending the interaction.

8.24
Staff member enters the room where another staff member was observing Ollie. Ollie's pupils are extremely dilated and he is licking and smacking his lips as he rubs his cheeks against the door repeatedly. He looks past staff through the open door of the room and his ears begin to flatten. Staff leaves and closes the door so he is not further frightened by activity in the hallway.

8/26
Ollie is sitting on top of his den upon approach. Staff calls Ollie's name and he walks over and begins rubbing is head against kennel door. Staff put on a car glove and begins to pet Ollie on his cheeks as he continues to rub against door. When finger is removed he begins to hiss and growl swatting towards them.

Pet-induced aggression

Potential challenges comments:
Pet Induced Aggression: Ollie solicits petting and attention, but after a few soft passes over the body he begins to growl, swat, hiss and attempt to bite at the assessor. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Ollie becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention.

Bite/Scratch History: Ollie has been involved in multiple bite incidents in the home. One to the owners Mother-in-Law while watching the cats, that broke skin. On another occasion, Ollie bit the 2 year old in the home while they wee playing. Resulting in broken skin. On a third occasion Ollie Bit the owner while they were walking down the stairs. Ollie bit and held owner's leg and hands. All breaking of these bit incidents resulted in broken skin.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:
New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Adult only home

The scratch tool is extended into the kennel, Ollie begins to rug against it purring. He rolls around rubbing into scratch tool. Assessor extends their finger and he begins to rub against it with a high quivering tail, Ollie continues to purr. His movements become more erratic and quick with extended petting. Unfortunately we had to remove all the hyperlinks to their websites to see if this was the reason our posts kept getting flagged from FB. The one main link will bring you to many of the ACC outlets of their page such as what we have posted below.

Emergency At Risk Placement list, Emergency outcome list, Location and Hours, List of New Hope shelter rescue partners - You will have to navigate through their site. If you type in nycacc (with out the and) .org all in one word into your browser it should take you onto their main site. You will have to navigate through their site depending what you are looking for. Unfortunately we can't do it here as it creates the direct hyperlink to their site which may be the cause of our posts being flagged by FB. We hope this solves the issue for us.
