AL LAMBERT: A LIFE IN THE LIMELIGHT

Al Lambert made his debut as a South Shore Rotarian in 1976. Today, as the club celebrates his 50th anniversary of service through Rotary, it is worth noting that his remarkable record of community involvement represents only one chapter in a career that has made him a familiar and beloved presence across Staten Island for more than six decades.

For Al, the stage has never been confined to a theater.

Perhaps he was putting a Staten Islander behind the wheel of a first Toyota, beginning his career at the family business, Staten Island Toyota. Perhaps he was behind a microphone, where he has entertained generations of Islanders since he was old enough to sing. Or perhaps he was helping a family build the home in which they would create a lifetime of memories—another chapter in Al’s remarkably diverse business career.

Whatever the venue, Al has spent a lifetime putting people at the center of his story.

It is difficult to calculate just how many Staten Islanders have been touched by Al’s talents, businesses, friendships and generosity over the decades. The number surely reaches into the thousands. His career has been a uniquely Staten Island production—part entrepreneur, part entertainer, part impresario, and, above all, part community institution.

In 2017, Rotary bestowed upon Al its highest distinction, naming him a Rotary Legend—an honor befitting a man whose service has become woven into the fabric of the organization and the community it serves.

Along the way, Al has enjoyed a career that has placed him in the orbit of some of entertainment’s most celebrated names, brushing shoulders with legends such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Mel Tormé and others who defined an era of American entertainment.

But perhaps Al’s greatest talent has been something altogether more generous: sharing the spotlight.

For five decades as a Rotarian—and more than sixty years as a Staten Island businessman, entertainer and community personality—Al has never seemed particularly interested in keeping the limelight for himself. Instead, he has a rare ability to make those around him feel as though they belong in it.

Friends, family, clients, fellow performers, business associates and, most significantly, fellow Rotarians have all had the privilege of catching a little of Al’s stardust.

And that may be the most enduring measure of the man.

Some people spend a lifetime pursuing the spotlight.

Al Lambert has spent his life making sure everyone else gets to shine in it, too.

Today our guest speaker was our own President-Elect Alexandria Vale, who shared her journey with a rare disease that led her to become a published author.
Alexandria lives with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, a rare disease that causes life-threatening allergic reactions. After feeling like there weren’t enough resources for those suffering from the disease, she wrote the book Mast Cell Activation Syndrome Cannot Break Me: My Journey of Strength, Determination and Unshakable Determination.
We are so proud of her for sharing her story and for advocating to help others!
