This is a long post, but probably one of the most important ones.
We had the privilege of speaking with the Brooklyn Eagle on behalf of our foundation and more importantly, about Jimmy.
We started this foundation in a state of shock, pain, and absolute trauma. There is no other word for it. It’s trauma. And it cut our family in a way that cannot ever be described. We sat together as a family one summer night, and collectively decided we needed to drive our pain into something with meaning.
It’s not about JUST raising money. There’s so many layers into what we do. Jimmy joined the US Navy and could not be deterred from his calling. He was the baby, the only boy, and someone we all fiercely protected, and despite many conversations, his mind was made up.
While we wanted a life of college parties and memories, Jimmy chose a life many of us could never fathom choosing. He chose to serve our country, and he did it with such pride and honor. We are proud of the man he was. He is far more than a statistic, he was in fact, our entire world. He was charismatic, loyal, funny, stubborn, faithful, and an all around, truly amazing dude. If you knew him, you know these to be facts.
It’s hard to read a headline like this, but it’s also why we do what we do. We pray we show hope, light, and faith. We pray that Jimmy’s impact and the love we carry and hold so tight to our chest, impacts just one person in this life.
I read somewhere that “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” Even in death, he is our light. The crack in our hearts is filled by every one of you that shows up to fill a void that runs so deep. The pain we feel drives the strength to show up, for ourselves, for our families, for each other.
I would be lying if I said the article isn’t a punch to the gut to read our story in black and white. But it is our story, and we are one of so many people who walk this life. Death does not define us, what we do in this life does. Jimmy lived a beautiful life, filled with love, loyalty, and faith. He will be defined by that. You aren’t just impacting a fundraisers grand total, you are part of honoring the life of a kid from Bay Ridge.
