Statement from Gwen Carr, Mother of Eric Garner and Founder of the ERIC Initiative Foundation:

“The ERIC Initiative Foundation commends the Biden Administration for understanding the concerns expressed by the civil rights leaders, community activists and law enforcement surrounding the unintended consequences of a menthol ban in Black and Latino communities.

This year, an election year, it’s especially crucial that we continue to work with the Biden administration toward longterm, culturally-aligned prevention and education solutions as it relates to smoking in our great country.”

The White House is reversing course after weighing the health benefits of the ban against the political risk of angering Black voters.

Staten Island Advance featured our office opening in an outstanding article from Reporter Jillian Delaney!!

“The E.R.I.C. Initiative Foundation celebrated the opening of its first office — located in Stapleton — on Saturday, drawing in public figures as the foundation works to better the community.

Named after Eric Garner, whose July 17, 2014 death drew national outcry, the E.R.I.C Initiative Foundation is helmed by his mother, Gwen Carr. She was joined by Elisha Flagg, the sister of Eric Garner; Terrence Floyd, the brother of George Floyd; New York City Public Advocate Jumanne Williams, former City Councilwoman Debi Rose, and many others, as the ribbon-cutting ceremony officially inducted the Stapleton office into the neighborhood this weekend.”

“... we want them here, and we want them to appreciate themselves and what they can do, because some kids don’t even realize their gifts,” said Gwen Carr.

WE ARE HONORED! 🙏🏾 During the pre-game show, CBS Sports and NFL on CBS interviewed Gwen Carr (Mother of Eric Garner), Samaria Rice (Mother of Tamir Rice), and Micheal Brown, Sr. (Father of Micheal Brown) to highlight the injustices of their deaths due to police violence.

Thank you to the Champions Seattle Seahawks’ players Doug Baldwin, Michael Bennett, and Richard Sherman, who spoke up and supported the fight to end these injustices against African Americans in America.

The ERIC Initiative Foundation is very grateful to see the Seattle Seahawks players keeping Eric’s name alive and fighting for justice. 🙏🏾
