FOR OVER FORTY YEARS WE HAD A BOUNTIFUL ORGANIC GARDEN. AS MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH SHORE GARDEN CLUB, WE ENTERED YEARLY CONTEST ON THE LOCAL AND NATTIONAL LEVEL WINNING FOUR SILVER BOWLS & MULTIPLE RIBBONS & CITATION.
WHWN BUILDING DSF/TERIS' HOUSE, OUR GARDEN & 'GREENHOUSE' WERE DESTROYED AND WE WERE ONLY ABLE TO SAVE 2 OF OUR FRUIT TREES.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR FUNDS TO REESTABLISH OUR THERAPUTIC ORGANIC GARDEN & EVEN OUR GREENHOUSE.
THIS GARDEN IS VITAL FOR ONE OF OUR RESIDENTS, RONNIE, THE CHIEF GARDENER. RONNIE NOT ONLY HAS DOWN SYNDROME BUT ALZHIEMERS AND ALL HE TALKS ABOUT IS HIS GARDEN. WE TRIED CONTAINER GARDENING BUT HE WAS NOT HAPPY. HE WANTS IT IN THE GROUND.
RONNIE IS NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO BENEFITS FROM THE GARDEN, KRIS, OUR RESIDENT COOK, ENJOYS GOING TO THE GARDEN TO PICK FRESH VEGETABLES & HERBS. ALAN ONJOYS MAKING SIGNS & BUILDING BOXES AND IT IS ALL HANDS ON IN PREPARATION OF THE SOIL.
THE GARDEN ALSO GIVES THE GENTLEMEN OF TERIS' HOUSE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK. THEY SHARE THIER PRODUCE WITH THE ELDERLY & THOSE IN NEED. THEY ENJOY SHOWING KIDS HOW VEGETABLE GROW & GIVES THEM A SENSE OF PRIDE.
RONNIE HAS WORKED ON COMMUNITY PROJECTS SUCH AS THE BEAUTIFICATION OF CAMP ST. EDWARD & THE CONFERENCE HOUSE HERB GARDEN.
WE ARE REACHING OUT TO YOU, THE COMMUNITY, FOR FINANCIAL HELP TO RESTORE OUR GARDEN.

WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR 50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DOWN SYNDROME FOUNDATION IN MARCH. WE HAVE BEEN SERVING PEOPLE WITH DS UNINTERRUPTED FOR THE PAST 50 YRS, FIRST WITH AN EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOCUSED ON THE NEWBORN & UP TO AGE THREE. THEN A PRESCHOOL FOR CHILDREN FROM THREE TO FIVE YEARS OLD. THE PRESCHOOL INCLUDED REVERSE INCLUSION, WE OPENED OUR DOORS TO NONDISABLED CHILDREN IN THAT AGE GROUP & THEY BECAME ROLL MODELS FOR OUR POPULATION. THIS HAD A VERY POSITIVE EFFECT ON OUR KIDS. THEY MIMICKED THEIR BEHAVIOR, SPEECH AND POSTURE & IN DOING SO, FOUND THEIR OWN IDENTITY.
WE HAD MUSIC THERAPY AND INCORPORATED THE MUSIC INTO READING, COUNTING, SPEECH & OF COURSE, SINGING & DANCEING. SOME OF OUR CHILDREN WENT TO A COMMUNITY BASED MUSIC SCHOOL WHERE THEY LEARNED MUSIC THEORY AND HOW TO READ MUSIC. THEY ALSO LEARNED HOW TO PLAY THE PIANO & SOME THE VIOLIN. THEY TOOK PART IN RECITALS & WERE ABLE TO SHOW OFF THEIR TALENTS.
WHEN THEY TURNED FIVE YEARS OF AGE THEY WERE SUPPOSE TO GO TO PUBLIC SCHOOL BUT SOME PARENTS RESISTED SO WE ESTABLISHED GRADED CLASSES FIRST TO FIFTH.
THESE GRADES INCLUDED NOT ONLY THE MUSIC AND PHYSICAL THERAPY & SPEECH BUT ACADEMICS & SHOP. ALL OF OUR TEACHERS WERE BOARD OF ED CERTIFIED. WHEN THIS GROUP WAS READY TO MOVE ONTO JR. HIGH, THEY HAD A READING & MATH LEVEL WHICH PROVED THEIR ABILITY TO LEARN.
WHILE THE SCHOOL WAS GOING ON WE HAD A OUT-REACH PROGRAM WHERE WE EDUCATED THE DOCTORS BY SHOWING THEM WHAT THERE PATIENTS WERE CAPABLE OF. WE WERE THE FIRST ONES CALLED WHEN A BABY WAS BORN WITH DS, SO THE PARENT COULD SEE WHAT THEIR OPTIONS WERE IN MAKING THE DECISION TO KEEP THE BABY OR GIVE IT UP FOR ADOPTION. THIS FORCED US INTO ANOTHER ROLL, FINDING HOMES FOR THE UNWANTED BABY. WE WERE VERY SUCCESSFUL IN PLACEING THESE BABIES IN LOVING HOMES. I, MYSELF ADOPTED 4 BOYS, 2 NEWBORN & 2 TODDLERS. THEY ARE NOW MEN IN THEIR THIRTIES, FORTIES & ONE TURNING FIFTY THIS YEAR.

TERIS' HOUSE IS A RESIDENT FOR YOUNG MEN WITH DOWN SYNDROME. IT IS PART OF THE DOWN SYNDROME FOUNDATION WHICH WAS FOUNDED IN 1969 & INCORPORATED AS A NOT FOR PROFIT IN 1973. GARDEN

For forty years we had an established Theraputic organic garden. When building Teri’s House, a resident for men with Down syndrome, that garden was destroyed along with our “greenhouse. We are trying to start over and create a new garden. So we are turning to you, the public, to help us reach our goal by your generous donations.

this garden is very important to the residents of Teri’s House & one man in particular, Ronnie. Ronnie is thee main gardener and the proud recipient of four silver bowls and a number of blue ribbons for his garden and gardens he has assisted with in the community on the local & state levels. Ronnie not only has Down syndrome but also Alzhiemers’. All he talks about is his garden, he misses the work and the rewards for his efforts.

It is very important, at this stage of his life, to have a garden. The other residents also benefit, Kris, who loves to cook, enjoys going to the garden & picking fresh vegetables & herbs for his dishes. Alan, who enjoys woodworking, makes signs & builds boxes for the plants. Everyone pitches in with the grunt work that goes along with gardening. They look forward to sharing the produce with those in need, the elderly and anyone who asks.

The green house was small and all we have left is the frame. Will you help us by donating to the DOWN SYNDROME FOUNDATION,INC/TERI’S HOUSE. Every penny counts & brings us closer to making these men happy.
