On behalf of District Governor Megan Ellinghouse:
Dear Rotary Family,
It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of Past District Governor Barry Kalar after his courageous battle with cancer. While our hearts are heavy, we can also take comfort in knowing that Barry is now at peace and free from pain.
Barry’s impact on Rotary stretched far beyond titles, meetings, and events. He was the kind of Rotarian who truly embraced fellowship, service, and joy in everything he did. Whether visiting clubs across the District, supporting international projects, mentoring leaders, or simply sharing laughter and friendship, Barry made people feel valued and connected.
He often spoke about becoming a “true Rotarian” after attending his first Rotary International Convention, and from that moment forward, Rotary became woven into the fabric of his life. Barry believed deeply in the power of Rotary to change lives — not only through service projects around the world, but through the relationships and sense of purpose it creates within each of us.
As District Governor, Barry led with warmth, enthusiasm, and heart. His District theme, “Be the One,” reflected who he was as a person — someone willing to step forward, serve others, and inspire those around him to do the same. He was passionate about growing Rotary, supporting The Rotary Foundation, and creating meaningful experiences that brought people together. And true to Barry’s spirit, one of his guiding pieces of advice was simple: “Give 100% and have fun.”
Barry leaves behind a remarkable Rotary legacy, but more importantly, he leaves behind friendships, memories, and a lasting example of service above self. His dedication to Rotary was also reflected in his generosity to The Rotary Foundation and in the pride he took in making his entire family Paul Harris Fellows — a reflection of how deeply he believed in Rotary values across generations.
Please keep Barry’s family, friends, and fellow Rotarians in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Barry will be greatly missed, fondly remembered, and forever a part of the Rotary family.
