The Yadkin Valley Garden Club is made up of a group of people from Elkin and surrounding communities who get together for programs about a wide variety of garden topics, as well as providing community service and outreach. The Yadkin Valley Garden Club is one of the clubs within District 4 of the Garden Club of North Carolina, and is also a member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc.

We have resumed meeting after a hiatus in July and August, but still staying active in our community. The fall decorations looked nice for the pumpkin festival. We also did a litter sweep on Standard Street. The most notable “ litter” we found was a $6000 check, dated that very day. We were able to return it to the company that issued the check, again, on the same day it was found. The October meeting was interesting as members took a gardening IQ self test/ inventory & learned the various ways we each garden- perhaps with music, motions, or written plans. This past week 5 members plus one helper planted a replacement dogwood tree at the Moon Gate entrance to the Healing Trail. Members also cleaned up around the area. Soon we will pull up the geraniums & vinca at the Gold Star Family Memorial that we have kept watered all summer. We will meet again in November and have a plant swap.

Our garden club decorated the Chamber of Commerce building again this year to give it a Fall look. Members brought pumpkins, hay bales, mums & scarecrow figures to the Heritage Center & created a wonderful display in anticipation of Elkin’s Pumpkin Festival. Thanks to everyone that participated by donating or by creating such a special arrangement.

Mission accomplished!!! We finished our work at the Healing Trail in time for the ribbon cutting ceremony & guided walk! Bob Hillyer, Will Gwyn, &
Jim Harrell gave some remarks, thanked the many volunteers & Katee Hettleman had the honor of cutting the ribbon! Many, many volunteers
spent endless days to bring the project together. The Giving Tree was dedicated to all the trail volunteers. Opportunities are available to have a permanent leaf added to honor someone by making a donation. We hope everyone has a chance to see the spectacular moon gate & walk the trail, & visit the individual coves along the trail.

A few weeks ago at the new Healing Trail we measured the placement of six hollies, mixed cow manure with soil, planted them, fertilized, watered - all in preparation for the ribbon cutting. Thanks to the fire department for delivering water so we could adequate water the hollies, ferns, rhododendrons & dogwoods since we had previously been in a severe drought.

Several members of our club showed up last Thursday to clean up around the Silverbell trees that we planted years ago. We had staked them & wired cages for support but the time had come to cut away the cages & clean the weeds around the trunks. Thanks to the dedicated ladies that showed up with wire cutters, gloves, & shovels! This is on the E & A Trail.

Good evening friends near and far! Our fundraising project has come to an end and we are pleased to announce we sold over $2500! Thanks to each one of you that helped us reach our goal, and know that YOU helped pay for the dogwoods, rhododendrons, & ferns that we will plant at the Healing Trail entrance. And please admire the colorful annuals that will grace the Gold Star Family Memorial at the park if you happen to be walking the track this summer, or bringing kids to swim. Usually we plant geraniums (red) and vinca (white). Club members take turns deadheading and watering in the summer months. Shipping will begin soon if you ordered.

Remember the NC Cooperative Extension Gardener workshop I took last November where the participants were given a bucket, soil & bulbs?
Well the “early spring” bulbs are in full bloom (you can’t see the beautiful tulip) with many grape hyacinths, snow drops & daffodils. Next will be the mid spring collection then the late spring bloomers. Best $5 investment I have made!!

***UPDATE*** the snow has melted around the moongate entrance to the Healing Trail. EVTA volunteers have been working widening the trail, adding a post rail fence, touching up some outlying pockets for meditation, and we already have some holes dug ready for our rhododendrons to go in!! We are so excited with the progress made & are ready to get our hands dirty ha ha! We were gifted some plants that we need to pick up, & we need to purchase the rhododendron & hollies soon. Your generous donations & purchases are so appreciated! They will also help us buy annuals for the Gold Star Family Memorial. We cannot thank you enough! Our sale is still live in case you have been too busy to look at the selection. I heard a few people say they ordered seed mats that you simply lay down & add water. Easy peasy!

This was the nicest surprise to get in the mail! Received the bulb Dec 15, planted it & it bloomed in a few short weeks, then bloomed AGAIN in early February! You can surprise someone with a bulb also, and make their day like this did mine. Our fundraiser continues a bit longer, to add beauty to our community.

In light of last weekend’s air to missle strike in Iran that killed 6 American soldiers, we highlight Elkin’s Gold Star Family Memorial that takes center stage at the park. Family members and friends are invited to sit on the benches and reflect on those brave servicemen that serve and protect our country every day. And, sadly, we remember those that did not return home. Our garden club takes pride in planting flowers at this poignant memorial every summer. It is an honor and a privilege that we take seriously. Your purchase during our fundraiser will allow us to continue planting flowers that many enjoy whether they are playing tennis, baseball, swimming or walking around the track.
