Good evening friends near and far! Our fundraising project has come to an end and we are pleased to announce we sold over $2500! Thanks to each one of you that helped us reach our goal, and know that YOU helped pay for the dogwoods, rhododendrons, & ferns that we will plant at the Healing Trail entrance. And please admire the colorful annuals that will grace the Gold Star Family Memorial at the park if you happen to be walking the track this summer, or bringing kids to swim. Usually we plant geraniums (red) and vinca (white). Club members take turns deadheading and watering in the summer months. Shipping will begin soon if you ordered.

Remember the NC Cooperative Extension Gardener workshop I took last November where the participants were given a bucket, soil & bulbs?
Well the “early spring” bulbs are in full bloom (you can’t see the beautiful tulip) with many grape hyacinths, snow drops & daffodils. Next will be the mid spring collection then the late spring bloomers. Best $5 investment I have made!!

***UPDATE*** the snow has melted around the moongate entrance to the Healing Trail. EVTA volunteers have been working widening the trail, adding a post rail fence, touching up some outlying pockets for meditation, and we already have some holes dug ready for our rhododendrons to go in!! We are so excited with the progress made & are ready to get our hands dirty ha ha! We were gifted some plants that we need to pick up, & we need to purchase the rhododendron & hollies soon. Your generous donations & purchases are so appreciated! They will also help us buy annuals for the Gold Star Family Memorial. We cannot thank you enough! Our sale is still live in case you have been too busy to look at the selection. I heard a few people say they ordered seed mats that you simply lay down & add water. Easy peasy!

This was the nicest surprise to get in the mail! Received the bulb Dec 15, planted it & it bloomed in a few short weeks, then bloomed AGAIN in early February! You can surprise someone with a bulb also, and make their day like this did mine. Our fundraiser continues a bit longer, to add beauty to our community.

In light of last weekend’s air to missle strike in Iran that killed 6 American soldiers, we highlight Elkin’s Gold Star Family Memorial that takes center stage at the park. Family members and friends are invited to sit on the benches and reflect on those brave servicemen that serve and protect our country every day. And, sadly, we remember those that did not return home. Our garden club takes pride in planting flowers at this poignant memorial every summer. It is an honor and a privilege that we take seriously. Your purchase during our fundraiser will allow us to continue planting flowers that many enjoy whether they are playing tennis, baseball, swimming or walking around the track.

Drove by the new Healing Trail today to check on the progress. The Moongate is certainly impressive. Elkin Valley Trail Association members & volunteers are to be commended for their many volunteer hours. The snow has melted & soon we will be digging holes to landscape the entrance.

The life of Jim Poindexter was celebrated with gusto today, in a manner that suited him. Known locally for his Flower Ministry that spread bouquets and joy throughout Surry and Wilkes county, Jim was known for his large elaborate arrangements. Once he graciously allowed me to host garden club at Wakefield Farm, and he shared his vision when arranging flowers. His theory was that one needed “a filler, a thriller, and a spiller” in your arrangements. Jim, you were one of a kind. Rest in peace, Friend. 💐

My daughter gives me peonies every year for Mother’s Day. I even moved some from our last house to our present home. I just ordered a bag of 3 varieties of peonies from YVGardenclub.com

Today we kick off our Spring Fundraiser!! Please help us by purchasing a bulb or two & sharing this message. The Gold Star Family Memorial is a special place for grieving families that have lost members in the armed forces. Likewise, Elkin’s new Healing Trail has pockets along the perimeter where one can meditate, pray, give gratitude or just rest. Our club has agreed to help landscape with rhododendrons & dogwoods, ferns, etc along the trail. The past several summers we planted flowers along the sidewalk leading to the memorial. With your help, we can continue to add lasting beauty to the trail, and keep planting annuals at the park. Thank you to our friends that have already purchased!

Hi Friends
Our club is now ready to launch our big fundraiser that will support not only landscaping the new Healing Trail but the Gold Star Family Memorial at the Elkin Park. We are the ladies (plus some devoted husbands, and a few adult children) that have continued to support the Elkin Trails by providing birdhouses, bat boxes, Carolina Silverbell trees, etc over the years. We are a nonprofit club, and have been working in the community usually behind the scenes to make Elkin one of the Best Little Towns to live in. We have landscaped Habitat Homes, decorated the Heritage Center each Fall, and planted trees at the Rescue Squad in memory of 911. Since Elkin has one of only 2 Gold Star Family Memorials in NC, we have been planting & watering flowers the past several summers. We have been able to do these things with a small bank account, low dues, and through generous donations. Now that we have big projects to do, we find ourselves needing more funds.
