Happy National Senior Citizens Day! Today, we are celebrating the incredible older adults who enrich our communities and highlighting the vital role local parks play in keeping them active, connected, and healthy!
To better understand how parks serve our growing older adult population, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) surveyed (2023) nearly 300 park and recreation professionals nationwide.
Here is a look at what the research reveals:
▶️High Commitment: 92% of park and recreation agencies offer dedicated resources and programs for older adults.
▶️Fostering Connection: 95% of agencies cite promoting social connection and combating loneliness as a top benefit of their older adult offerings.
▶️Bringing Generations Together: 30% of agencies offer intergenerational programming—like arts, reading, and mentorship—that bridges the gap between youth and seniors.
▶️Dedicated Investment: 30% of agencies allocate 10% or more of their annual operating budget specifically to older adult programming and outreach.
From fitness classes and wellness hubs to nature walks and social clubs, local park agencies are adapting every day to ensure older adults can thrive and age gracefully in place.
