Striped Bass: Stocked fish can be found in Raystown Lake, Lake Wallenpaupack and Beltzville Lake. The wild migratory fish can be found in the Pennsylvania portion of the Delaware Estuary and river. Steelhead: A popular migratory Rainbow Trout found in popular streams throughout Pennsylvania. Key spots include Elk Creek, Walnut Creek and other Lake Erie streams. The Steelhead is different from the Rainbow Trout in that it migrates to the ocean and returns to freshwater to spawn; the Rainbow Trout always stays in freshwater. A number of populations are endangered or threatened across the United States due to changing ocean conditions, overharvest, habitat destruction and the building of dams. Spotted Bass: A species of North American freshwater fish belonging to the Sunfish family. They are the rarest of the Black Bass, limited to the Ohio River drainage, especially around Pittsburgh, where the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers meet. They prefer warmer, slower-moving waters and are often found in reservoirs and lakes within the Ohio drainage. They are found around aquatic vegetation, submerged logs and rock or riprap walls. Smallmouth Bass: A species of freshwater fish in the Sunfish family. Found in the Susquehanna, Allegheny and Delaware river systems, and also in Lake Erie. They prefer medium to large streams with rocky bottoms and deep, clear lakes with structure like logs, stumps and rock outcrops. Because it is intolerant of pollution, the Smallmouth Bass is a good natural indicator of a healthy environment, though it is still much more resilient than most trout species. Sauger: Found in the Ohio River system (Monongahela, Allegheny and lower pools). Some are reported in the Susquehanna River system. Found in areas with high turbidity, low channel slope, low stream velocity and deep water. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission monitors populations and conducts stocking, showing increasing numbers in key rivers. Diversions and dams affect habitat and spawning areas. Visit wildlifeforeveryone.org and check out our upcoming events. Donate or become a member to help us promote wildlife conservation and education in PA.
