Back-to-school can feel like someone hit fast-forward on life: new teachers, new social dynamics, higher expectations, and a sudden return to structure after the looseness of summer.

On this week's episode of Ripples of Resilience, Marisa sits down with Dr. Peter Montminy, a clinical child psychologist, to get specific about what back-to-school stress looks like in real homes and why it shows up even when kids are “fine.” They discuss two common types of back-to-school stress—anxiety about the unknown and a grief-like sadness about what’s ending—and how both can lead to irritability, clinginess, shutdown, or even headaches and stomachaches.

Proud Moment for Jana Marie Foundation

This summer, Jana Marie Foundation’s mental health display had the incredible opportunity to be featured at the National Jamboree for Scouting America as part of the Be the Change”section of the event.

We are so proud of this project and honored that it was included in an experience bringing together Scouts from across the country.

The display features six educational panels focused on:
🧠 Understanding mental health and wellness
🚩 Recognizing warning signs
💬 How to start a conversation
🌿 Self-care and healthy coping
📚 Mental health resources
💚 Ways we can all promote mental health and well-being

Our hope is to make conversations about mental health easier, more approachable, and more common.

Seeing this display reach Scouts and families on a national stage is a powerful reminder that mental health education belongs everywhere and everyone has a role to play in creating communities where people feel supported, connected, and seen.

Have you had a chance to visit our traveling exhibit this summer? We can’t wait to continue bringing it out this Fall and beyond!

We're less than a month away from Worldwide Su***de Prevention Day on Thursday, September 10.

As always, this meaningful event will feature speakers sharing their experiences with su***de loss, dancers from Centre Dance, a candle lighting ceremony led by Evelyn Wald, and live music from Biscuit Jam.

This year's event will be held at Centre LifeLink EMS in State College from 5:30-8 pm. Reserve your free tickets today so Chef Lorber can include you in the headcount for the free community meal. Thank you to the American Foundation for Su***de Prevention and Hartley's Potato Chips for sponsoring this event!

Yesterday, our team led 225 community members through QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer su***de prevention education!

We started the day in Saxton, PA, where we worked with 122 Tussey Mountain School District team members before heading back to State College, where we partnered with PSU Res Life to train 103 incoming Resident Assistants. (In total, 206 RAs were QPR certified yesterday!) In between the courses, we took a break for lunch and spotted a neat skink and some mushrooms on a team nature walk.

We often describe QPR as the CPR equivalent for mental health crises. It's a skillset that nearly anyone can learn and benefit from being able to use at a moment's notice. Over the course of an hour and a half, participants learn how to recognize warning signs of a mental health crisis and then practice how to ask someone directly about su***de before referring them to professional support. If you're not yet QPR Certified, we highly recommend registering for one of our upcoming virtual sessions! Visit our website (link in comments) to learn more.

Will we see you at the Penn State Blue Course tomorrow? 👀

Join us for the foundation's first-ever Shine On: Concert & Glow Golf Tournament this Saturday, August 15!

The festivities kick off at 5:30 pm with live music from Area 38 (acoustic) followed by Caryn Dixon. The suggested ticket donation is $10, which gives you access the live music, a mini golf course, and an array of outdoor yard games. Food and beverages will be available for purchase as well.

After the music, the 9-hole night golf tournament will begin! If you're looking to secure a last-minute glow golf team, please reach out to [email protected].

All proceeds from this event help keep our mental health and su***de prevention education programs free and accessible to as many kids as possible. This is a great way to give back while enjoying a relaxing evening with family and friends. We hope to see you there!

We're counting down the days until the Glow Golf Tournament & Concert this Saturday, but in the meantime, there are still courses to teach.

Hannah and Marisa had the pleasure of leading an Adult Mental Health First Aid training for a fantastic group of PSU staff and faculty yesterday. We are incredibly grateful to The Leonhard Center for Enhancement of Engineering Education for sponsoring this valuable workshop.

Congratulations to the 24 newly certified and recertified Mental Health First Aiders! If you are interested in bringing this course to your workplace, please reach out to [email protected] or give our office a call. We'd love to chat more!
