Dr. John Gottman on physiological flooding.

It’s called the 20 minute rule…
One of Gottman’s intervention studies had couples interrupt a conflict discussion for 20 minutes. They stopped discussing the tense issue and did something neutral while their physiology settled aka their bodies relaxed. Studies show that’s how long it takes. When they resumed, the quality of the interaction changed significantly—they regained greater access to humor and affection, and listening skills.
So, Call a 20 minute timeout
It’s not rejection it’s regulation.
We have a friend, who has a cousin, who has a neighbor, who has a brother (😊 IYKYK) who benefited greatly early on in their marriage from the 20 minute rule.
