Here is David Nevins' speech from the Friday night Pep-Rally:
Hi Everyone. Are you all excited to be here!
I hope so, because this weekend is an opportunity to show the world what Penn State is all about.
As someone who graduated Penn State, and has lived in this incredible town for over 40 years, I ‘m kicking off this pep rally to announce a new community campaign called “Together We Are One”
Together We are One is a call to action and an invitation to the entire nation to hear our story and visit our community and campus; a great place to work, to live and go to school; a town and university filled with natural beauty and an indomitable spirit.
“Together We Are One” consists of people who have ties to the community of State College and to Penn State who have joined together in a campaign that will, through specific actions, prove that we are a community and university that fully understands the past and is dedicated to building a better future because of it.
By embracing this moment within our collective history, “Together We Are One” will help define the future for our community, based on strong principles and determined action.
You will see signs all over town announcing this new campaign. Please support us in showing the world what Penn State, State College, and Centre County are all about.
I’d like to end with a quick story. Yesterday I met a Penn State student who is now a senior. She told me that she loves Penn State, and she used to say with pride that she went to Penn State whenever people asked. She told me that this summer, it was different when she was home, and when people asked what school she attended she said Penn State but quietly without much pride.
I told her that’s going to change this fall. I told her that’s what Together We Are One is all about. It’s time for all of us, all students, all alumni, all residents of Centre County to say it loud and to say with pride that this is a great university, and a great community and we will move forward stronger and better then ever.
And with that sense of enthusiasm for the past and the future I ask the support of every one of you for
Together We are One, by helping us get the message out, throughout this town, throughout this great country our ours, that We ARE and We Always Will be proud of our town, our community and our university.
And with that let’s get this pep rally going and show our support for our team.
