🎣🇺🇸 On May 21st, the Veterans Fishing Program had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful group of Veterans from the Altoona Chapter of the Healing Waters Program at the Clair Property on Spring Creek.

We welcomed 10 guests for a day filled with fishing, lunch, fellowship, and relaxation along the stream. Several Veterans landed some great fish, but most importantly, everyone enjoyed the opportunity to spend time outdoors together.

A special thank you to Dave Thomas and the Healing Waters group for joining us.

🏆On March 21st, 2026, at our annual banquet, we were proud to present the 2025 Al Phillips / Jean Brenchley Award to Monica Himes in recognition of her outstanding leadership in promoting women’s angling.

Created by Jean Brenchley to honor individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to advancing opportunities for women in fly fishing, this award celebrates those who strengthen community through mentorship, inclusion, and service. Monica embodies all of these qualities through her steady dedication and generosity within the Spring Creek Chapter Trout Unlimited Women Anglers’ program.

As an active Steering Committee member, Monica consistently steps forward to help shape and support programming that makes a lasting impact. She plays a key role in organizing events, mentoring new anglers, and contributing to statewide efforts such as the Women’s Mentoring Retreat. Her willingness to share skills, equipment, ideas, and encouragement has helped build a welcoming and confident community of anglers across experience levels.

Monica also volunteers at outreach events including Trout Unlimited’s Fly-Fishing 101 for Women and supports initiatives in partnership with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. Her inclusive teaching style, practical guidance, and consistent encouragement reflect the spirit of mentorship honored by Jean Brenchley and Al Phillips.

👏🏻We are grateful for Monica’s leadership and the example she sets—helping women, youth, and veterans find confidence and joy on the water.

🇺🇸Veterans Fishing Program Relaunched on Armed Forces Day

On May 16, Armed Forces Day, the Veterans Fishing Program relaunched with a gathering at the Clair Property on Spring Creek. Over a dozen folks showed up. Bamboo rod builder Jim Downes was in attendance with his daughter Karen. Dave Thomas from the Altoona Chapter of Healing Waters stopped by and will be bringing his Veteran program members for a get-together on May 21. Helpers included Ray Faczan, Larry Ragan, Ford Stryker, and Dan Kerstetter, who led a discussion on knots, set up, etc. As always, sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to making this event happen and helping to build momentum for the program 🙏.

❗️Future Veterans Fishing Program events are already being planned. If you’re interested in participating, please sign up for the Veterans Mailing List: https://www.springcreektu.org/veterans-fishing-program

🎣🌧 Fly Casting Fun in the Rain! 🌧🎣

On May 9th, our chapter had the pleasure of giving some fly casting experience to a large group of 4-H youth at the PSU Ag. Progress Days site in Rock Springs during their 4-H Wildlife & Forestry Field Day.

The day was wet, but that didn’t stop us from heading outdoors and sharing fly casting lessons with these enthusiastic students. Their energy and curiosity made the rainy day a great success! 🌿🐟

Thank you to everyone who attended our Speaker Series event with Frank Landis on night time fishing! We had a great turnout with 16 attendees and an evening full of useful tips and stories.

A few key takeaways from the night:
🌕 A full moon may not be the best time for night fishing
🎣 It’s important to fish familiar spots you already know from the daytime
🪰 Subsurface flies can often be the ticket
🐭 And while topwater mousing is a blast, patience and persistence pay off!

Thanks again to Frank for sharing his knowledge and to everyone who came out to learn and connect!
