om the presence of a spring in Starkville, Mississippi. The Choctaw Indians called the spring Hicashabaha, which, according to local tradition, means “sweet gum leaves on the water.” This fitting name was given by the Indians because there was a beautiful grove of sweet gum trees below the spring where they came to drink and to make their baskets. The spring was near the site of the present First United Methodist Church in Starkville. The Hic-A-Sha-Ba-Ha Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on October 8, 1910.

In honor of celebrating Constitution Week, the Mayor of Starkville has signed this proclamation. The week begins on Sept 17 with the nationwide bell ringing at 3:00 pm (Central time). Bells Across America symbolizes the church bells that rang in Philadelphia when the U.S. Constitution was first signed. The bells will ring for 1 minute at that time on that date! Join us.

Constitution Week is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23 to commemorate its history, importance, and bring attention to how it serves still today.

Bells Across America is an annual celebration of the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
Participants gather to ring bells, much as the church bells of Philadelphia rang out when the U.S. Constitution was first signed at 4 pm on September 17, 1787.

We are asking organizations, churches and citizens to ring bells on September 17th for 1 minute at 4:00 EDT (3:00 Central!) to herald the beginning of this commemorative week.

The Polk Administration is certainly going “Out With A Bang” with a magnificent Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution 116th State Conference last week and a strong surge in State Regent’s Project fundraising efforts! We are so proud of the perseverance of our State Regent (and chapter member) Hellen Hicks Polk. Thank you also to our chapter members who arranged greenery for centerpieces, contributed Rosalie tins for the silent auction, donated canned goods for veterans, assisted with hostess duties, and attended State Conference. To top it off, our chapter also sponsored the 5th-grade state winner in the American History Essay Contest and endorsed the 2022-2025 MSSDAR Chaplain-Elect Misty Tanner Booth.
