om the presence of a spring in Starkville, Mississippi. The Choctaw Indians called the spring Hicashabaha, which, according to local tradition, means “sweet gum leaves on the water.” This fitting name was given by the Indians because there was a beautiful grove of sweet gum trees below the spring where they came to drink and to make their baskets. The spring was near the site of the present First United Methodist Church in Starkville. The Hic-A-Sha-Ba-Ha Chapter, NSDAR, was organized on October 8, 1910.
