Kambi ya Krismasi SiSaLeSe (SiSaLeSe Christmas camp) 2022 starts next week by planting the spirit of self-love, creativity and culture through kids' craft projects!
One of the problems in the educational system in Tanzania is a lack of stories for kids, especially stories that mirrors juvenile life and their African culture. SiSaLeSe aims to promote the indigenous culture of kids in Tanzania. As one of the starting points, Neema Loy-Redd, the founder of SiSaLeSe, created a story that mirrors the life of Masai boys in Tanzania. Unlike much Juvenile Fiction, which uses names that have been translated from Western languages, this story uses Masai names like Lomayani and Loseriani. Lomayani means “A blessed one,” and Loseriani means “Peace.” Also the book uses typical childhood surroundings and everyday activities to promote connection.
The book is about a boy who has a handmade car that was given to him by his brother. The car breaks, and he fixes it, which makes him feel very proud. It is common for boys in villages in Tanzania to handmake toys, such as cars, as they have little access to factory-made toys. Childhood crafts from village kids in Tanzania are usually not acknowledged in Juvenile Fiction. Neema Loy-Redd felt a need to acknowledge kids' talents and thus encourage young readers to do the same as the protagonists in their favorite stories., The pictures below illustrate some of the parts in the story. The illustrator is Wolter Loy, Neema Loy-Redd’s brother, and also a contributing member of SiSaLeSe.
SiSaLeSe still heavily relies on its volunteer founders to run. So far we thank you for our donors this year, but we still need more money to run the Christmas Camp and register SiSaLeSe as a non-profit. Activities for Kambi la Krismasi this year include making Lomayani’s car and a showcase of kids crafts. The younger kids will also color the pictures in Lomayani’s book. We need to purchase about 100 copies of bound books, foods, Christmas decorations and gifts for the kids. Please, support us to reach this goal. You can do that by purchasing our handmade Christmas ornaments from African cloth: https://www.moodymagnolia.com/products/sisalese-charity-fundraising-ornaments?utm_medium=product-links&utm_content=android&fbclid=IwAR3bZRqfFRcKtIwP2t6UtoWcPoDCDZc_PDPYemq9YqZS5auRAZOO39pCBGU
