Eunice Kennedy Shriver was born on this day in 1921. She was a sister, a humanitarian, and the founder of the Special Olympics. But before all that, she was a woman who refused to accept the way the world treated people with intellectual disabilities.

Her sister Rosemary had undergone a lobotomy in the 1940s, a devastating decision made by doctors who believed it was the only solution for “difficult” minds. Rosemary’s life was forever changed—and so was Eunice’s.

What society labeled as shame, Eunice saw as injustice. And she decided to fight it.

In 1962, she opened her backyard in Maryland to children with intellectual disabilities, offering them something rare: a chance to play, to compete, to shine. That small day camp grew into Camp Shriver. By 1968, it had become the first International Special Olympics, held in Chicago.

She once predicted that a million athletes would one day compete.

She was wrong—the number is now over 5.5 million across 193 countries.

Eunice didn’t just build an organization. She helped change how the world sees people with disabilities—from pity to pride, from exclusion to empowerment.

As she once said:
“Special Olympics athletes are spokespersons for freedom itself—they ask for the freedom to live, to belong, to contribute, to have a chance.”

She passed away in 2009 at the age of 88. But every race run, every medal won, every smile of inclusion—that’s her legacy in motion.
