Heavenly Father,

We come before You with grateful hearts as a new school year begins.

Your Word reminds us in Proverbs 4:7 — “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
Lord, we pray for wisdom, understanding, and discernment for every student, teacher, and staff member.

📖 For our students — Protect their hearts and minds. Let them remember Philippians 4:13 — “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Give them confidence to face challenges, courage to stand for what is right, and the determination to do their best.

📖 For our teachers — Grant patience, creativity, and strength. Remind them of Galatians 6:9 — “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Bless them as they pour knowledge, guidance, and encouragement into every student.

📖 For every staff member — From the front office to the cafeteria, the bus drivers to the custodians, fill them with joy in their work and remind them that their service matters. Let their presence bring warmth and stability to the school community.

Father, we declare Psalm 91:11 — “For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”
We speak protection over every classroom, hallway, playground, and school bus. Keep our schools safe from harm and fill them with peace.

Let this year be one of growth, kindness, and unity.
May every seed planted bear good fruit, and may Your light shine brightly in every corner of every school.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!

Daniel Hale Williams: The Unsung Pioneer of Modern Medicine
Born in 1856, Daniel Hale Williams overcame poverty and racism to become one of the greatest medical pioneers of his time. In an era when opportunities for African Americans were scarce, Williams broke barriers as a surgeon, educator, and visionary.
In 1891, he founded Provident Hospital in Chicago, the first Black-owned and in*******al hospital in the United States. This groundbreaking institution not only provided critical care but also trained Black doctors and nurses, offering opportunities that were denied elsewhere.
Two years later, Williams made history by performing one of the first successful open-heart surgeries. With no modern equipment or tools, he repaired a stab wound to the heart of James Cornish. The patient survived and thrived, cementing Williams’ place as a pioneer in cardiac surgery.
Beyond his surgical achievements, Williams fought to break down systemic racism in medicine. He co-founded the National Medical Association, an organization created to support Black doctors excluded from the American Medical Association. As chief surgeon at Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., he mentored countless young physicians, leaving an indelible mark on the future of medicine.
Daniel Hale Williams’ story is one of innovation, resilience, and a commitment to equality. His legacy continues to inspire generations.

NMAAHC historian, Marya McQuirter, uncovered this amazing story about five black women who biked cross-country in the mid-1900s while working on her PhD dissertation.
Nearly 87 years ago, five friends; Marylou Jackson, Velva Jackson, Ethyl Miller, Leolya Nelson and Constance White biked from New York to Washington, DC during Easter weekend.
In 1928, these five black women biked over 250 miles in three days — an unusual feat for black women at the time. They started out on the morning of Good Friday in Manhattan, where they all lived, and biked 100 miles (a century in bike terms) to Philadelphia. They spent the night at the Philadelphia Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). On Saturday morning, they biked 40 miles to Wilmington, where they spent the night, and on the morning of Easter Sunday, they arrived at the nation’s capital. While in DC, they did some sightseeing on the National Mall and at Howard University. And they also posed for the above photograph in front of the Washington Tribune newspaper building at 922 U Street, NW. Addison Scurlock, founder and owner of the popular Scurlock Studio, was the photographer. Scurlock was known for documenting the life of African Americans in the nation’s capital.
