It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Dorothy Saxe (1926 – 2026), a beloved member of our Pilchuck community, esteemed collector of glass and contemporary craft, and Pilchuck Trustee from 1981 – 2025.
Since first discovering contemporary glass with her husband and fellow collector, George (1921 – 2010), in the 1980s, Dorothy was a passionate collector of contemporary glass and committed advocate for Pilchuck. For 44 years, she served on Pilchuck’s Board of Trustees, forging close friendships with artists and collectors, including Dale Chihuly, Flora Mace, Joey Kirkpatrick, and more. Her philanthropic work within contemporary glass, contemporary craft, museums, and arts nonprofits, inspired multiple generations of collectors and has continued to uplift and support established and emerging artists alike. The memory of Dorothy, her and George’s generosity, and her immense impact on our community will live on through the decades of friendships, years of advocacy for contemporary craft, and the two Pilchuck scholarships that the couple founded — the Saxe Scholarship and Saxe Scholarship for Workshop Assistants and Artist Assistants — in support of future generations of glass artists.
