This month we had snow! The weather forecast gave us plenty of notice to prepare. The carport frames that we use for aviaries, are engineered to withstand a 2 foot snow load. I know that the snow must be removed before it gets too heavy. This storm gave us 10 inches total and we did not lose any trees.
Each November we bring in all birds that are feather picked, old, new, handicapped and any bird that looks uncomfortable in the weather. I have indoor heated, colonies that match the outdoor ones. To be honest, I would prefer to bring them all indoors in the fall/winter seasons. If the birds are outside, I have to work outside during the colder seasons. And, I don't like working outside in colder weather. Most of the birds that winter outdoors have bullet proof plexiglass, heated greenhouses. Once I saw the forecast of snow and frigid temps, I brought all of the birds indoors....yes there is room. The birds were fired up and showing off playing games with their neighbors enclosure. I have opted to keep them in until mid March when it warms up.
I have been vocal about the danger of allowing too much snow to build up on the Costco carport frames. Even though it is unusual for us to have an accumulation snow in the Seattle ish area, it is imperative to pay attention to the weather reports in fall/winter seasons. Our Sanctuary is close to the salt water coastline, which has a milder climate zone than those living east, at the base of snowy mountains in western Washington state.
Finally, when housing birds outside it is imperative to consult an arborist about surrounding trees, in advance! We have emergency 300+ gallon water tanks, should pipes freeze. For those of you who need a tool to help remove snow form aviary roofs, they have special rakes that remove snow from house roofs. They are light and work very well. Generators and lots of friends we can call.
Thank you everyone for your concerns during this crazy snow storm. We are prepared. Lori
