We are proud to announce the 2022 Standish-Sterling Sports Hall of Fame inductees. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at halftime of the SSC versus Hemlock Varsity home football game on Friday, Sept. 16.
1) Adam Gulvas-Class of 2009. Adam earned 8 varsity letters at SSC. He started at inside linebacker for three seasons of football. He earned All-Conference honors all three years and was Most Valuable Defensive Player as a senior. Adam was chosen to the Bay City Times Dream Team and All-State for his last two years. He played in the MHSFCA All Star game. He was Academic All-State all three years. He threw shot put and discus for the track team and played varsity basketball and was team captain his senior year.
He lettered for four years of football at Northwood University playing defensive end and special teams. He was on the All-Academic in the GLIAC each of his four years. Adam now works for Farm Bureau Insurance.
2) Kent Kraatz-Class of 1994. Kent earned varsity letters in football and track and also participated in power lifting. He earned All-Conference as a senior in football and a junior and senior in track. He qualified for the state finals in track.
Kent accepted a football scholarship and played offensive line earning four letters at SVSU. As a junior he was chosen as the 1997 MIFC Offensive Lineman of the Year and was first team All-Conference as a junior and senior. He was also honored as an AFCA Division II All-American. After college Kent began a teaching a coaching career with stops at Grayling. Pinconning, and SSC. He coached football and track all through his years at SSC. He currently is the Athletic Director at Saginaw Township School District.
3) Casey Potts-Class of 2009. Casey played football, ran track, and competed in power lifting. He earned All-State honors in two different sports. Casey earned All-Conference as a running back/receiver on the 2008 state semifinalist football team. Casey was All-State in power lifting for four years. He was JV State Champion in 2007 and Varsity State Champion in 2009. During his career he set four state records and five school records.
In track, Casey was a hurdler and sprinter. He set the school record in the 300 meter hurdles and was a member of the school record 4x200 relay team. He earned several All-Conference honors in 300 hurdles and sprint relays and was All-State in sprint relays in 2008-9.
After high school, Casey accepted a track scholarship to Northwood University and was All-GLIAC in the decathlon in 2010.
4-Matt Suminski-Class of 1989. Matt was a varsity baseball starter for four years and a football starter for three years. He earned All-Conference for three years in both sports. As a catcher in baseball, Matt earned All District three times, All-Region twice, and held the school record of 26 career home runs. In football he was honorable mention All-State his senior year. During a football game in his senior season, Matt hit an opposing runner so hard that the player landed on the track. The official on the play ran by and told Matt that it was the best hit he had ever witnessed in a high school game. After high school, Matt played baseball at Grand Rapids Junior College.
5) 1986 Girls Softball Team. The team finished with a 25-7 record. They were NEMC League and District Champs. They lost in the Regional Finals in the State Tournament. Bev Allen-Skinner coached the team.
Natalee Sullivan was Team MVP. She pitched five no-hitters, 10 shutouts, and struck out 122 batters in 132 innings. Kim Nichols was the team's Most Improved Player. First-Team All-Conference players included Sullivan, Sherri Morse, Janet Illig, Mary Hewitt, Tammy Keeley, and Kim Nowak. Other team members were Kim Haley, Debra Belchak, Stephanie Koester, Kim Belchak, Heather Deneen, and Kim Nichols.
6-Mike Coquillard-Coach, football and baseball. Mike began his teaching and coaching career at SSC in 1972. He was head of the physical education department throughout his time at SSC. He started the CPR Training Program at SSC when very few schools in the state were doing so. Mike helped design a physical education program which was recognized as one of the best in the state and he was chosen Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 1995.
Mike coached JV baseball for 25 years and football for 30 years. In football he coached at all three levels with more than 200 wins. He was selected as an Assistant Coach of the Year in both sports and was inducted into the MHSFCA Hall of Fame in 2006.
