SVIA’s mission is to initiate and carry out community beautification and physical improvement projects that enhance the quality of life in the village of Stamford. In 2011, our group planted and maintained 109 barrels in addition to plantings in two gardens along Railroad Avenue and one garden located along Main Street. Christmas Wreaths – Each winter holiday season, wreaths are hung along Main St
reet and Veteran’s Park and at the village street corners. SVIA members order new wreaths, refurbish the wreaths’ bulbs and bows annually, in addition to working on the wreaths’ wiring. Seasonal Banners – SVIA maintains decorative seasonal banners that line Main Street during the year. SVIA and The Stamford Village Crew – The Village Crew assists us
in our work by placing the flower barrels at the curbs each summer, hanging and removing holiday decorations and banners. The crew also facilitated the restoration of Headwaters Park. We couldn’t do our work without you! Flag Day Parade – SVIA members march in the Flag Day Parade. In
June 2011, 300 daisy seed packets were distributed to parade watchers. July 4th Flags – Annually, SVIA places the American flags along Main Street in Stamford in the morning. Scarecrows – Scarecrows occupy the SVIA flower barrels in September for the annual Scarecrow Festival. In 2011, SVIA joined forces with MURAL (Mount Utsayantha Rural Arts League) to repair, refurbish and repaint many of the scarecrows. Thank you to MURAL for collaborating with us! Stamford Railroad Station – In 2011, SVIA joined the Greater Stamford Area Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Stamford Area Trust, and the Stamford Historical Society in the cleaning and refurbishing of the station to be used for work and meeting space for these groups and to open the building periodically to the public. Thank you to our partners in this community project! Christmas Tree Lighting – Held annually in years past, the SVIA along with community members, decorate and light one of the taller pine trees in Veteran’s Park. Christmas carols are sung and hot beverages served. Trees of Remembrance – Historical Trees of Remembrance were purchased with funds from the Betty McDowell Memorial Fund and planted on the front lawn of the Frank W. This project culminated an ongoing effort to plant and replace trees in Stamford.
