Food Rescue US

Food Rescue US Food Rescue US directly transfers fresh food from grocers and other businesses to people facing food insecurity. Fill plates, not landfills.

Powered by volunteers and technology, we help end local hunger and cut food waste, one rescue at a time. Food Rescue US is committed to ending American food insecurity by engaging volunteers to transfer fresh, usable, excess food from restaurants, grocers and other sources to hungry families throughout the US.

"Children only get one childhood, and there are no do-overs."
Crystal FitzSimons, President, FRAC

Kids are heading back to school this month. For millions of them, that means school breakfasts and lunches will start again after a long summer of uncertainty.

But the picture is not that simple. Since the 2025 reconciliation law, over 5 million Americans have lost SNAP benefits. When children lose SNAP, many lose automatic access to free school meals too. Food costs are still rising, and 1 in 5 children still lives in a food-insecure household.

Every week, our rescuers deliver food to the family shelters, community pantries, and afterschool programs where kids and their families show up hungry. It is not a solution to childhood hunger. It is one piece of a much bigger effort to make sure no child goes without.

Thank you to every rescuer, donor, and partner helping us do our part as the school year begins. There is no do-over for this childhood.

A recent episode of The Daily from The New York Times followed families in Arizona who lost access to SNAP even though most of them still qualify for it. One grandmother who has relied on the program for 15 years while raising her grandchildren put it simply: "I think it's inhumane to take food from people. What are we doing here?"

Nearly 4.5 million people nationwide have already lost SNAP access this year, caught up in new paperwork requirements and staffing cuts rather than actual fraud. It's a reminder of how thin the margin is for so many families, and why programs like SNAP and the work of food rescue organizations both matter so much.

Give the episode a listen at the link below, then join us in getting good food to people who need it!

Meet our July Star Rescuers!

Every month, our app awards the Star Rescuer badge to the volunteer with the most rescues at each site. In July, these were the rescuers who kept trunks full, rescues covered, and neighbors fed.

Our 2025 Impact Report is here!

35 million meals rescued. 43 million pounds redirected from landfills to families who need them. 147,000 rescues completed by nearly 30,000 volunteers across 51 communities in 25 states.

2025 was a record-setting year, and it also marked our 15th year of work. In 2011, we moved 200,000 meals in our first year. Today, we rescue 100,000 meals every single day.

But hunger in America is still rising. More than 48 million Americans face food insecurity, including 1 in 8 of our neighbors and 1 in 5 children.

There is more to do, and we are just getting started! Read the full report at the link below:
