Dear Reader,
Thank you for coming along on this journey with me. Or, more aptly, on this journey with Lo, John and Jason as they travel across the country, all in search of something different. Lo, for a parent she’s never met. John, who needs to make amends after big mistakes and long absences, and with Jason, who unwillingly wanders away from one future while grappling with a past he’d prefer to leave behind.

For me, this journey was a long one. I started writing Manmade Constellations well over ten years ago, then shelved it for one of various reasons that writers tend to do such things. It’s likely I wasn’t quite ready to write it back then. I had my own journeys to rove before I was ready to put this one into words. When I finally picked this manuscript back up again, I met it with a revived vision, and as I wrote, I began to understand precisely where I had to take these characters.

In many ways, it’s an exploration of what it takes to leave the only home you’ve ever known, to trust yourself to face your biggest fears, to own up to mistakes and move into the future with more clarity and self-knowledge than before. In other ways, it’s a long series of misadventures, detours that many people face in life. Those junctures where staunch beliefs are enforced as both a shield and a weapon—how the things we believe so firmly about ourselves and the world can keep us from knowing or understanding either of those things very well at all.

So I’d like to say thanks to all of you who commit to the journey of Manmade Constellations. I hope it takes you places you didn’t expect.

With appreciation,
Misha Lazzara
