May we never forget!

One day each May we pause to reflect the greatest sacrifice.
We bow are heads and say our thanks to those that paid the price.
To keep our rights, they served and died, so we could all be free.
To live our lives each passing day, as they were meant to be.
The Brave, the Strong, the Heros True, their numbers each day grow,
Since we began this country strong, showing others what we know.
So I ask you please, reflect and pray, not only every May.
Remember all who served and died, each and every day.

Today is National Poppy Day and for all of you that don't know what that is:

National Poppy Day®

Poppy Day is celebrated in countries around the world. The American Legion Family brought National Poppy Day® to the United States by asking Congress to designate the Friday before Memorial Day, as National Poppy Day.
On the Friday before Memorial Day, wear a red poppy to honor the fallen and support the living who have worn our nation's uniform.
The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. It reminds Americans of the sacrifices made by our veterans while protecting our freedoms.
Led by the American Legion Auxiliary, each year members of The American Legion Family distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

And here in honor of all of our countries hero's is my tribute to them. May you always remember that this weekend is not just beginning of the summer season!

When You See A Poppy

When you see a poppy, think of me.
I died with others, so you'd live free.
Soldiers, sailors, warriors all.
Marines and Air Force heard the call.
We fought, we died, though not our choice
Now you, remaining, must be our voice.
Our homeland's great, though perfect not.
Keep working so we're not forgot.
Value freedom, it's worth the fight.
Keep that truth and don't lose sight.
When leaders fail then let them know,
And with your vote tell them to go.
A perfect land? There's no such thing!
But we come close, let freedom ring.
So honor us who kept you free
When you see a poppy, think of me.

Dear Family and Friends
Hope all had a great Thanksgiving yesterday.
I usually don't post my Holiday poem until Christmas Eve or close to it. Sometimes because I don't write it until last minute. The sorry state of our world though inspired me to write it early this year so I am posting it now. If you like it and agree I hope you will all repost it because I think it is a message much needed.

Dear Santa

Dear Santa, it’s Betty and I wish you good Cheer.

I have to admit, it’s been many a year,

Since I sat down to write you a special request,

Instead of just saying, bring what you think’s best.

This wish isn’t simple. It isn’t a toy.

It’s something much needed by each girl and boy.

This world needs some help to set itself straight.

I kept hoping we’d find it, but we really can’t wait.

There’s hatred and war and crime causing fear.

Our leaders don’t help, it gets worse every year.

They forgot how to listen and only just fight.

Compromise is a lost art, they’re all sure they’re right.

God gave us free will, right back at the start,

Knowing we’d struggle and sometimes lose heart.

We all need reminding, whomever we be,

We’re all Human Beings, my neighbors and me.

Yet we only see different, and then we distrust,

Open mind, open heart, to learn that, we must!

Even religions, strive on top to be,

Though one God leads all, why can’t they see.

If all would sit down and listen and talk,

They’d see more in common, then our, two legged walk.

So I’m asking dear Santa for a really big gift,

To help us all fix this terrible rift.

As you fly 'round the world on this Christmas Eve,

Send out prayers full of love with the presents you leave.

Asking God to forgive us and help us be strong.

Learn to love one another and admit when we’re wrong.

Teach new generations mistakes we have wrought

Love, Honor, Respect be the lessons now taught.

So that is my wish and that is my prayer,

I ask you to spread as you fly through the air.

I’ve been pretty good so I’m hoping you might.

Merry Christmas Dear Santa and to all a Good Night.

Last week our Over 60 Team competed at Stamford Senior Centers Senior Olympics. Our Team named themselves the Hawaiian Dreamers and dressed accordingly. It was wonderful fun and a great job done by Chris Crain and her staff. Our Hawaiian Dreamers win prizes for Best Banner, Relay Race and Coaches Relay. Can’t wait for next year!

Today is Giving Tuesday and I would like to ask that if you are considering making a charitable donation you think of Over 60 Club.


What do seniors do at Over 60 Senior Neighborhood?

What could possibly be so great to keep 200 seniors going to Over 60 Club faithfully every month? Some once or twice a month, some 2-3 times a week and some 5 days a week.
Could it Be

• The nutritious meal served each day in partnership with Catholic Charities for a voluntary donation of $2-3?

• The 10 exercise opportunities each week including General Fitness, Senior Aerobics, Silver Fit, Tai Chi, Chair Yoga, Zumba and Line Dancing?

• The information programs held monthly on health topics, service programs, safety issues and more?

• Health screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, flu shots and more?

• BINGO? Wii Bowling?

• The holiday parties held throughout the year including Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s, Passover Seder, Easter, Cinco De Mayo, Mother’s Day Tea, Summer Bash, Halloween, Diwali, Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas and any other reasons that can be snuck in to celebrate?

• The help with referrals and paperwork from simply reading their mail they don’t under stand or making phone calls where all the recordings confuse them, to filling out forms they need for services?

• Subsidized transportation passes for Norwalk Transit Easy Access and CT Transit?

• New skills like computers, knitting crocheting and more!

Getting up each morning and knowing you have something to do with friends that are happy to see you and care about you. Knowing you still contribute to the community by helping others at the club. Even just making someone else smile adds value to your life. Isolation and depression are one of the biggest factors in declining health in older people. The Over 60 Club was formed 75 years ago just to give seniors a place to be together with others and it continues that and so much more today. This is all done at no cost to our members since many of them are living on a very low income and barely making it. We don’t ever want anyone to stay home because they feel they can’t afford to attend the Club. We work hard seeking grants and donations to maintain our programs so we can continue to provide these services to Stamford area seniors. Please stop by to see us and learn more about our great program.
