Thank You to the Center for Animal Protection & Education!!

When the Bug–Fred Mountain–Stallion and Hawk fires broke out, LRTC went to work.

And when we went to work, we started spending money.

In fact, our volunteers spent nearly $3,000 in fuel hauling animals to safety. For an all-volunteer organization like LRTC, that is serious money.

Several of our supporters suggested that we reach out to the Center for Animal Protection & Education (CAPE) and their Wildfire Animal Assistance Fund (WAAF). So we asked.

CAPE answered.

They made an unexpected donation that covers the fuel costs our volunteers incurred while responding to these fires.

That means the money our volunteers spent getting animals out of danger can be put back into LRTC—and back into the equipment, fuel, and resources we need for the next call.

We—and the Washoe County animals we helped—truly appreciate CAPE and the support they provided.

CAPE is a Grass Valley-based organization doing great work, and we can attest firsthand that they stepped up when help was needed.

🇺🇸 LRTC is coming to Dayton Valley Days — Saturday & Sunday, September 19 & 20.. 🇺🇸

If you’ve ever wondered what LRTC is all about, come find us.

We’re bringing the team. We’re bringing the equipment. And this year, we’re bringing something you won’t be able to miss.

We’ll be talking about what we do, the rescues we respond to, and what it takes to become an LRTC volunteer.

It seems like a thousand years ago, but in reality, it was only four and a half months ago that the 2026 Wild Horse Connection & LRTC Fundraising Dinner was held.

Since then, both organizations have been working hard to fulfill our respective missions. Recently, we had the pleasure of delivering the promised appreciation-wall plaques to our Palomino-level supporters.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dolan Auto Group, Anneke Schat’s Darling Bakery in Washoe Valley, Horse Tails Magazine, and Truckee Sourdough for their generous support and for helping make the 2026 fundraising dinner such a successful and memorable event.

We look forward to seeing everyone again next year! Please watch for an announcement in January 2027 with details about the next event.

T-Shirts are coming to the LRTC Team and our partners very soon!

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who played a role in the Bug/Stallion Fire Large Animal Emergency Evacuation Response.

The response required long hours, hard work, teamwork, and an incredible amount of dedication. From our LRTC volunteers and partner agencies to the shelter staff, animal services officers, communications teams, and everyone who stepped up to help—we are grateful for each and every one of you.

These shirts are a small token of our appreciation and a reminder of what can happen when dedicated people come together to help animals and their communities.

URGENT HOT WEATHER CAUTION & WARNING
As we are all experiencing, extreme summer heat has settled into our region. Everyone needs to adjust to these conditions—for both themselves and their animals.
Regrettably, LRTC was called into a very unfortunate situation this past Friday. At 3:10 p.m., our dispatch center received a report from a local resident who, while passing a private property, discovered a domestic horse that appeared to be suffering from colic. The resident also reported that several horses on the property had no visible water available.
Our on-duty dispatcher asked the caller to provide video of the situation. The footage appeared to corroborate the report and showed the horse exhibiting signs consistent with colic. The caller advised that no one was present on the property at the time.
Because this involved domestic horses on private property, there was little LRTC could legally do beyond immediately notifying the appropriate authorities. We contacted both law enforcement and animal control as quickly and forcefully as possible. We later confirmed that animal control had responded to the scene by 4:31 p.m. While we do not know all of the facts or the final outcome, we are deeply concerned that this horse may not have survived.
Unfortunately, this serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that extreme heat poses to both people and animals.
According to the National Weather Service, our area is under a Heat Advisory from 8:00 a.m. Wednesday through 8:00 a.m. Thursday, followed by an Extreme Heat Watch from Thursday morning through Sunday morning for the greater Reno, Carson City, and Minden areas.
Now is the time to prepare.
• Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the day.
• Avoid overexertion during the hottest hours.
• Ensure all animals have continuous access to clean, fresh water and adequate shade.
• Check on elderly neighbors, friends, and those who may need assistance.
See something—say something. If you witness a domestic or confined animal suffering from the effects of extreme heat, contact your local animal control agency or law enforcement immediately. A timely report may save a life.
Please stay safe, look after one another, and help protect the animals that depend on us.

Wildfires and Preparedness – LRTC at Work

With the peak of the 2026 wildfire season still ahead of us, LRTC is working diligently to prepare—both internally and alongside our community partners—for whatever challenges may come.

Recently, we participated in two back-to-back preparedness events.

The first took us to Silver Springs, Nevada, where we attended a Lyon County Search and Rescue (SAR) meeting focused on emergency evacuation planning. During the meeting, SAR officials outlined their evacuation strategies, and LRTC was invited to contribute our experience and concepts for the evacuation of domestic horses during disasters.

The very next evening, our team was in Truckee, California, presenting a training for the Truckee-Donner Horsemen’s Association. The class focused on safely loading horses into trailers during emergencies. It became especially realistic when one of the demonstration horses proved particularly reluctant to load—providing participants with valuable experience handling a situation that often occurs during real emergencies.

In both events, our goal was the same: to prepare before disaster strikes. By sharing knowledge, strengthening partnerships, and improving readiness, we help both people and animals when emergencies occur. This proactive approach reflects the Preparedness phase of FEMA's Disaster Management Cycle.

LRTC Training for the Public

LRTC is honored to once again partner with the Truckee-Donner Horsemen's Association, returning for the third time to present our Domestic Large Animal Loading During Emergencies class.

This free educational event will also feature presentations from the Town of Truckee Office of Emergency Services and the Nevada County Sheriff's Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team, providing valuable information to help horse owners prepare for emergencies and evacuations.

Whether you're an experienced horse owner or new to caring for large animals, this is an excellent opportunity to learn practical techniques and emergency preparedness strategies from agencies that respond when disasters strike.
